Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Access Advantages?

I've been using Access for about 15 yrs. developing multi-user, code-intensive, complex desktop apps for the pharmaceutical industry. For the past couple of years, it seems that Microsoft's developer support of Access has been waning, prompting me to look into alternative platforms.

I studied FileMaker and developed a few apps with it, hoping that I would find it better than Access. However, its IDE and flexibility is lacking for creating highly customized apps. I have since abandoned FM and have gone back to Access.

This week I discovered Alpha Five v10, and have become very interested in it, based on the user posts I've read. Most of the posts report the many advantages that AFv10 has over Access. To objectively evaluate AFv10, I'd like to know what advantages Access has over AFv10. For example, I've read that the AFv10 IDE does not allow stopping running code on a particular line, making code changes, then continuing running the code. This is something I do frequently with Access when debugging.

What other things can Access do that I should not expect AFv10 to do?

    Hi John,
ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.
I think the same would apply to Alpha 5 V10.5.

There is a very powerful code debug facility but in the early stages of working with Alpha, most of the code is written for you, so you wont have much use of it.

One thing I have found that Alpha wont do for me is, make me my morning toast and coffee!!!

The v10 debugger was rewritten from earlier versions of A5. Most changes I like.

You could always start the debugger at a particular line, but now conditional debugging is much more powerful. You can also change values of existing variables in your code and continue processing with the new values. You can't add new lines of code during a debug session.

I am not familiar enough with Access to comment on it's strengths.

Access can take more of your time than Alpha5V10.5 to accomplish the same job.

All things aside, I threw access out years ago due to it's NOT being able to do what alpha did intuitively. I am sure access has gotten better, but Alpha has gotten better too.

I too went temporarily to FM Pro. It did not have the down deep strength.

Any problems with alpha are addressed quickly by the owners and that is something you do not see with the others.

I can go on for hours with details, but you have to try it for a bit to see for your self. Bear in mind, there are major changes in you style that will cause you grief coming from access. It IS worth it.

          Re: Access Advantages?

Wasn't there an article or blog written by a long time Access developer that Selwyn posted as an announcements within the last 3 months? I remember reading it. Well written and answered many of the questions posed here.. I have it in my mind that is was a chap from England ?? in the banking industry maybe?? I searched quickly and couldn't find it, but I'll keep trying.

          Found it:

            Hi Mike

It was indeed a Brit! His company is migrating an app originally developed in Access to Alpha which is being used in Parliament. The article is in one of the newsletters.
