Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    AlphaToGo Web Framework DBF/SQL Available

The AlphaToGo Web Application Framework for DBF and SQL is now available for purchase at http://alphatogo.com/products.a5w. Both versions are brand new updates. The SQL version is available for both MySQL and MSSQL Server. There is also an option to purchase the Template with Steve Working's new Language Pack at a discount (deliver content in multiple languages).

Here is a new short 3-minute overview: http://screencast.com/t/NTcwZGY5Yjgt

For those of you who don't know, the AlphaToGo Framework has approximately 80 customers with a dozen or so completed websites based on the Framework. The Framework provides an instant website including the most common commercial features (sorry, no e-commerce yet). It has built in Content Management, User Management, Preference Management and Style Management.

If you already own the Framework and want to update, give me a few days to work up a upgrade option on my website, and expect an email from me. If you want it sooner, email me.

Congrats on having this ready Steve.

For those who are interested in the Language Manager, what it can do and how it works, I have an overview video here:

And, of course, you can buy it alone at The IADN Store, or save by buying it along with Steve's Framework. See the links he supplies here.

Re: AlphaToGo Web Framework DBF/SQL Available

I am recommending this framework to my clients who are new to Alpha for two reasons... It gives them a web site that can be up and running in days or even hours, but more importantly, if they want to know how to use Alpha efficiently and elegantly, it is a great learning tool.

Want to learn CSS? Here is a working model that you can easily manipulate to look at the effect of changes in a live setting. How about using an SQL backend? Here are working examples you can study and copy for your other projects. Got the middle of your project built, but now need to add signup, terms and conditions, various navigation components? It's all here. Great timesaver.

This is a great product...wish I'd thought of building it!

Re: AlphaToGo Web Framework DBF/SQL Available

I just purchased the Framework for SQL....and I have to say that I am VERY pleased with the package. I am a relative Alpha newbie and a certified SQL newbie. With this framework, I was able to get my site up and running in just a couple of hours.....not bad for learning both backend and Alpha at the same time!

I am now integrating grids into the new system...I can't get over how much is already done for me via the framework. This site will be replacing a web site I created using Filemaker Pro as the backend (along with PHP). The time requirement do that was tremendous. With Alpha Five and the new SQL Framework, I will be able to migrate that whole system over from Filemaker to a SQL based backend with MUCH more functionality and complete the transition in a matter of weeks....not months!

If anyone is hesitant about spending the money for this...trust me....it is worth every penny and then some!

          Well done Steve!

Re: AlphaToGo Web Framework DBF/SQL Available

            Super cool!

When I first started developing in Alpha this template saved me. The best part is an intact user management system that updates the web security tables. Also, when you get into you are exposed to object orientated programming which sets the tone as you modify the template for whatever project. Alpha Sports is also helpful to understand functionality, but Steve's template give you a clean start and solid framework.

Also, the documentation is very professional and easy to understand.

            Cheers!

Agreed. The template gives such a robust starting point for a web app.....it is definitely worth the money I spent. It is a VERY well thought out and implemented tool.

Fixed. I'll have to speak with the programmer:).

The current framework examples are below:

Re: AlphaToGo Web Framework DBF/SQL Available

Funny you should ask. I've been working on a new product that is a combo of the normal Framework and a TabbedUI, learning how best to incorporate those two paradigms. I worked out how best to deal with login or session timeout while in the tabbedUI and to navigate between TabbedUI and the 'normal' website portion.

I can see the entire Admin portion moved to a TabbedUI, but there are a couple issues to deal with first. One - the A5W couple pages that go inside a TabbedUI need to be stripped of their headers and footers.

Re: AlphaToGo Web Framework DBF/SQL Available

The video showed smooth sharing of TabbedUI and a normal website. But I haven't moved the Admin to a TabbedUI yet, the video had the Admin portion in the same 'normal' website side. As to cost, not sure yet, I'd have to survey. If everyone wants it in a TabbedUI, then minimal cost. If just a few, larger cost. The issue on my side is having to then maintain four products - DBF/SQL with Admin in a normal menu, DBF/SQL with Admin in a TabbedUI.

I really like the TabbedUI, but not as a public-facing user interface. I see it as a 'work area', something internal staff would use.

And maybe others have, but I have not worked out how to deal with session/login timeout perfectly yet. I found last night that I still have a problem when you try to access a component that has security while inside the TabbedUI. If that component has login restrictions, it still leaves the TabbedUI to go to the Login.A5W page, and then does not return to the requested component when you log in. These details are important.

--> I wish the login dialog had an option to be an Ajax popup window that hovered above whatever object prompted it, and then continued to the requested component/page after login. Going off to a full login.a5w page would be unnecessary. But that requires a change in the security framework default nature. Most recent websites have this characteristic.
