Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Performance issues after applying patch W7

I downloaded a patch a couple days ago and I'm getting some strange behaviour from Alpha. There are many issues but most are pertaining to display items or cosmetics.

Is there something I might be able to do to restore the previous version, or is there a way to reinstall an updated version of the entire app rather than patching.

There is nothing consistent but every couple of hours I have to shut down the app then go back in to initiate a short period where it performs without error.

    Examples of reoccurring issues:

    • In a form that has tabs, the tab titles will not appear until I click in the empty space area where they're supposed to appear, same with browse column titles, they don't display until I click on the column.
    • I make a change to a form and even though I save it, the changes do not take.
    • Create a drop down super-control browse field and the filters don't work. Next time I go into the form, the field is not a drop down browse anymore, it's just a plain field.
    • A Simple button that is just supposed to open a form goes further by manoeuvring on its own in the form and lands on a field that doesn't even have a tab stop
    • I copy and paste appearances to the other items but it only pastes to half of them, it will hide them. I make a custom browse and paste appearances to other columns then they hide, I have to manually expand them,

    Hi Chuck!

You updated but never stated what was in the update that was needed?

Assuming then that you updated just to update (don't do that!!! :) ) and now want to go back to the prior patch version, just reapply that prior patch....that's it.

Regarding how to apply the latest version without patching.....hmmm....until no more patches are produced or you happen to download the full version just after the last patch is made, then you can't. The full download, if not current to the latest patch would be downloaded and then the latest patch applied.

If the issues you have are reproducible then definitely submit a bug report so that they will be fixed!

Re: Performance issues after applying patch W7

I did an update because Alpha told me there were patches available. I didn't note what patches they were. Since my last post, I uninstalled then reinstalled Alpha. The functions are now working properly however its strange that I have a bunch of errors throughout the app that were not there before the reinstall.

For instance, some field rules are showing errors. I studied the expression and it looks fine, I rebuilt the expression with the same algorithmand the error went away, it seems to be stable now.

It's not a glitch I can put my finger on and the system seems to be running fine now.

Computers are an exact science, but due to so many variables, errors can be inexact. I'll just chalk it up as a system clog and continue to develop in hopes that it fixed itself.

      Thanks for your input Mike.

Chuck, you might consider saving the patch files separately. Give them unique names. I uuse the build numbers to identify them here. That way if I need to "roll back" an update I just install a previous patch.

That's exactly what i'm going to do Tom. After reloading the app, I was rolled back and saved the patch files in case I had to reapply. This time I didn't get the performance errors I experienced the first time, so everything is up to date and running fine now.

No Sooner do I enter a post that everything is running fine when the whole thing goes haywire.

I have to do the patch because forms created in the updated version don't open in the earlier verison.

Now when I created a form it saves fine the first time, but if I edit the form in any way, I get an error that the BAK file cannot be found.

What it this error and how do I fix it. I have to edit these forms and the changes won't save.

              Chuck,
It is what it is---Alpha cannot find the path indicated in the error message. Wherever that path is being set, make certain it is correct and also make sure it can be used (active? If over a network then it has to be changed).
