Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Need Help regarding Out of Memory

I'm not sure what's going on. My application has been running fine for 8 months. I make a few changes and now I'm doing nothing but chasing after issues.

I reverted back to original design but Alpha is not reacting the same as it used to.

I don't read anyone else reporting these types of issues. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now.

This is important, who can I turn to for support.

I have made changes to table structures before without a problem, add, change, delete fields, no problem. Now I try to make a change to a table and I get an out of memory error. What's that all about. Never had this before.

I reinstalled Alpha without a patch and if I start my app, I get warnings when opening my forms. After I do a patch the warnings disappear and the forms open fine.

I go to change my table structures and I get the out of memory error.

It is not my OS because I have tried this on 3 computers. Each one gives the same response. Out of Memory.

Upon further investigation, I'm finding that some tables can be changed while others cannot. So that shows it's not the applicaiton but more so the contents of the table.
What kind of anomalie would attach itself to a table to make it behave in this manner.
Is it possible that the configuration of a field rule or the contents of a piece of data would affect it in this manner.

Is there a utility that can check the validity of a table structure.

Charles, you might review the rules for fieldnames in table structures. Perhaps you're using illegal characters in a fieldname and have corrupted your table. You also might review the list of "reserved words" that Alpha uses for its own purposes, and which we're not supposed to use in our apps. Perhaps you're using a reserved word as a fieldname in your table structure.

If you have a "memo" type field in your table, check out the size of the ".ftp" file associated with the table. We just had an incident where the memo file (.ftp) had blown out to 2GB instead of 10 MB. Every once in a while, memos can tend to blow out and need to be fixed or restored to a normal state.

        Start out with the basics:
        1-Compact the database
        2-Rebuild the indices

          Tom,
Sure enough, there's the FTP at almost 1.8Gig

I wish I could reach through this screen and shake your hand in thanks.

I never would have thought to look at that as an option. Funny thing is I didn't really do anything I was aware of to fix it.

I deleted the large file and reponed the DB which gave me all types of errors, then I extracted that one table from a previous version and it worked fine

I don't know what to say other than THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH

I was at the point of giving up.

            Hi All,

I get the same error time after time and am begining to pull my hair out over this continual error.

Why does Alpha not fix what is causing this to happen?

            Ant.

I'm curious Ant....have you or someone else you know reported this as a bug with a reproducible way to create the issue? If not then perhaps this answers your question.

                Ant-Tech,

It's possible you've stumbled into a bug. It's also possible you're misusing commands or statements that result in the behavior you're getting. There may be nothing for alpha to fix. Are you working with memo field data when the problem occurs? Are you following the guidelines recommended in "Memos and Browses that work" at www.learn alpha.com? What steps have you taken to try to solve the problem? What can you tell us about your system? your database? any memo fields or files?

                  Double Ditto on Tom's statement
If you using memos (of any kind) on a multi-user app, and not following the rules for using memos in the link in Tom's email, it is highly predictable you will have periodic to frequent corruption.
