Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Press SAVE twice to save record

I seem to recall seeing a thread on this before, but can't find it.

A small example is attached. Click on the 'Menu Items' button on the mainmenu that loads initially. Enter a new item and press the 'Save' button. Nothing happens and the record is not saved until you press 'Save' a second time. What do I need to do to get the record to save on the first button press?

Works ok for me - only one click.

      Hi Peter,

Thanks for giving it "a look." Very rarely for me it will save on the first try, nearly always takes 2 presses, occasionally even 3 to get the job done. I'm using the latest build. Hmmm.

Re: Press SAVE twice to save record

        Hi Bob,

I have the same problem in one of my forms and also now in yours.
The app I use it is a small one and I am the only user, so ...

Took some time to investigate but could not find the reason.

I placed the display of a messagebox before and after the save statement. It's curious that I get the messages displayed and the record is not saved.
I also tried to display a variable with the <tbl>.get_mode()output on the same form but it was not working as I expected. Must look at a refresh option.
As said I took some time but not enough.

But as Peter does not have this problem I think about the View/Settings/Preferences deep in my computer but can't explain why.

        Who's next?

          Ton,

Thanks for taking a look. I've been playing around with this and think I've found the trigger. If you have time please try the following:
If you have any fields on your form that use a Field Rule - Simple List Lookup, go into those field's properties and uncheck the Tab Stop, then try entering a new record again.

Doing so makes the button work properly for me.

            FWIW,
I also notice that leaving the fields as Tab Stops and using the System right click menu 'Save' for the form also works correctly every time.

              Hi Bob,
I have played with it a little. It is as you stated.
But I do not want to skip the unchecked Tabstop fields. The simple lookup list what I need while entering new records.

              What have you for workaround?

instead of using system menus, or custom menus, put a button on the form.

Re: Press SAVE twice to save record

                  Hi Martin,

Have you tried the app in post#1?. The problem with the button is the unexpected not responding to the commit command.
You have to push 2 or 3 times to get your entered record saved.

As Peter says 'one click' there must be something else that causes the problem. However It works now by skipping the fields with an unchecked tabstop property.

So I need a work around in this work around. Can you follow?

Something else is going on here.

On my XP SP3 box running build 3272_3589 the Save button works first click every time. Suggest everyone start posting the specs for their equipment and build. Maybe then we can see a common denominator.

Also behaves correctly (one click on save btn saves record) using build 3420_3606 (VS10) on my XP PRO SP3 box

                      Ton Spies,

The work-around I ended up using was to enter a dummy blank record and then put the form in 'change' mode and present it to the user. You then need to build in some functionality to remove blank records for when the user cancels out in the middle of entering (in actuality updating) a record.

                      Tom Cone,

Thanks for taking a look at this. I'm running XP-Pro SP3 as you are. Version is 2002, Intel Core 2 Duo, E8400 @ 3.00GHz, 2.99GHz and 2.96GB of RAM.

I seriously would try to use XDialog for entering new records.

                        Working for a solution:
But how did you find the idea about the tabstop unchecking?
There must me more than one reason I suppose. Preferences? Regional settings?
Have you send this already to Selwyn?
