Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to add not-to-be-saved fields to a detail view

I think I'm having a mental block here...

I'm wanting to add temporary fields to a detail view of a web component, which aren't going to be saved. How can I add a checkbox, say, to a form that is only going to be used to display hidden fields when checked? It's not to be saved back to the database.

I'm using SQL Server back-end tables, which don't appear to have the same options as dbf tables when creating a component.

The dbf tables have a facility to create Calculated Fields, which appear in the Available Fields list for placing on the form.

This feature isn't available for SQL tables (i.e. linked tables), so what is the equivalent process for SQL? How can I add virtual/temporary fields to a web form?

In the SQL Select Statement field list, things like:

    '' AS Field1, '' AS Field2

Then in the Field Properties, make the fields Updateable and set the table to update to:

    *unbound

      Thanks for the pointer, Chris.

I've created a Select statement for the table now, with a literal as a selected field, i.e. 'chkbox' AS chk

However, I'm baffled as to where to set 'unbound' and 'not updateable'.

I've searched help for the word 'unbound' to no avail.

When you say 'Field Properties', do you mean in the grid component, or somewhere hidden in the SQL select setup?

It's in the Properties for Table Alias. Replace the word "wt_email" in my attached image example with "*unbound".

Using this method you can actually create a grid that doesn't save any data to any table when the Sumbit button is pressed. Instead, you can use code in the CanInsertRecord (and/or other events) to 'process' all of the data in your controls - like a standard Dialog component.

In the grid builder ,Select the field properties section ,highlight the field then under field properties, Update settings, Table Alias.
There is additional help at the bottom of screen but you might need to resize it to view.

            Trev,

I'm glad these guys got back to you before I had a chance, but i noticed another something--if you query 'chkbox' AS chk, it's going to display the initial value "chkbox" for that field when you open the grid or detail view. You could cause the checkboxes not to display a value not in the list you define, or you could just go back to my earlier suggestion, '' AS chk, and no value will be displayed.
