Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Adding a field to "standard" report

I am evaluating QReportbuilder and am having an issue.
I am creating a new report based on the 'Sales by Customer Detail". I need to add the Job Number to the report. I also need to sort and sub-total by job without regard to the customer. in other words Job is the primary sort and total field

I have been unable to find out where JOB is stored. I have tried to read the documentation, but the quick start guide is not much help.

Can anyone point me to a set of good documentation that will help me find where the JOB information is kept?

You just missed the weekly webinar....

Your question is a great topic for the webinar..

I think you would be better off starting with the salesline or invoiceline tables and building your report based on one of these tables. Then you can summarize as needed.

I'm guessing that your job id is in the customer name - ie

    customer1:jobA
    customer1:jobB

so you would use a calculated field to get the job number.

    job_nbr = word(fullname,2,":")

translated means divide the field into words delimited by the :
then show me the second word of each fullname

so the example above will yield

    jobA
    jobB

Hope that helps. (see you next week at the webinar..)

OK I see scripting in my future.

I "assume" I need to figure out where and how to code xbasic.
I found the events icon but don't know what I don't know. Is this an OnArrive event or something is else better. I am familiar with VB and VBA but it has been about 3 years since I did any code. Retired after 45 years of programming.

Can you point me to a link where I can get some XBASIC for Dummies? this would help me get started.

I have 15 days left on my evaluation. This product looks like it will do everything I need it to do, but I really need to figure out how to program it as part of that eval

      Thanks for the reply

Actually this doesn't require xbasic. It's a calculated field. That's available from the report writer (press the xy button on the toolbar)

Comprehensive Alpha help is available here..

Re: Adding a field to "standard" report

Thanks for the assistance. I have the field working. At least doing the selection. Now I need to go ahead and work with the docs. I have to put some logic with it. This is going to get "interesting."

If no job number, do not select.

So I think I will either have to fix the SELECT or run some logic on each SELECTed row. At least that would be my VB approach
