Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cannot enter a new record, Alpha Crashes

My app was running fine, other than minor bugs here and there most functions worked.

2 days ago something occured that will not allow the entry of a new record into the database. I havent' made any major changes except for a couple of form imports. I reversed that import but the problem persists.

When I am at the Parent Table and click on the function to enter a new record. I get the message that "Alpha has stopped working" and it shuts down.

Working on this for 2 days now and can't figure out what the issue is,
Are there any standard tests I can run to see what causes this crash.

I will add that I did do an upgrade to Alpha to run the latest version, but
i don't think that's what the issue is because earlier versions of the App are allowing for a new record entry.

Running apps on Vista, XP, W7

    Chuck,

First check is the Default Browse, can you enter new record.
Second check is the Field Rules

Assuming you have already done this !

      Yes,
i tried entering from the Form and the Browse, same thing, Alpha just shuts down.

I did not check field rules yet. Will do that now. So many rules, I'm not sure where to start.

Guess I will look at the calculated ones first.

It bothers me because I dont' recall making any changes to rules, but maybe another change I made has affected the rules.

Thanks Michael, you led me to the right path.
it was indeed in the feild rules why the system crashed when entering a new record.

Although i don't undetstand why, if i use Previous Values for one of my fields, the system will crash

The field is an 'image field'. So maybe that's a known restrcition, but I discovered it the hard way

          Chuck,

I had this very same problem many years ago with v4.5 it was to do with the indexes that Alpha automatically creates for previous value field rules, but I found it was OK providing a previous record value did already exist.

My solution was to create a dummy index for the table named 'abcdindex' so this dummy index took up the first position alphabetically in the index list.

Actually that makes sense since there were no previous values in this case.
If i create an application and package it with those rules and no previous values exist, then i could be in trouble.

            Thanks for the tip,
