Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Open table

I have a DB that when I open there is one table always reporting to be in an opened state. I have checked everything on startup and cannot see why this table is opened. I do not open it at this point.

I even used ctl+alt+shift to access to bypass everything and yet the table still shows itself as being opened. It seems to be stuck open. I can't compress or backup the table in this state. It does not seem to have any impact on things as it is only used to store some specific data and will only ever have the one record.

If I use table.isopen("tablename), I get a false, so it is saying it is not open, yet if I look at database Information it shows as open. If I try to update iindex or compress I get the table in use message. This is a wacky one.

Why would the table be open and is there a way to fix this?

    Re: Open table

If app is on your local PC, is file open after a reboot?
If it is on a server, you can determine who opened it. If someone just switches off their PC it can leave the file open.

Not sure if you know, but on server right click My Computer and go to Manage, then go to Shares and Open Files (or something like that) find the open dbf file and you can determine the username of who has the lock on the file.

Thanks again Garry - very helpful. My plot thickens on this one. Attached is pic of the offending DB when I open the view on my machine. I can confirm that it is only on my machine that this happens. If look at this view at the same time on other machines it is closed

            Re: Open table

The open table is caused by something. What is the table? Are you opening eis in autoexec and not closing properly? Is there an operation doing something as you open the app? Ops can leave tables open.
Does it happen if you open app and not run autoexec and not open a menu form?

              Re: Open table

No I do not use this table for anything other than storing my version number and details for the about box form. It was used in an older program (lotus approach), non related, to manage my table serial numbers. It is a weird problem as I cannot duplicate it on any other machine and they all say it is closed on theirs when it is open on mine. It is only an issue when I use backup as it comes up as locked. I am the only one who does the backups. Not an issue on any other machine. I do not use shadow so we are looking at the same tables ect
