Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Combining Multiple Tables into one - with rules

Is it possible for Alpha to combine multiple tables into 1 and retain the format of each table.

I created a relational database with multiple tables. I made an error in the fact that 3 of those tables really should be only one.

It's going to be a significant task to rebuild those three tables into one.

With all the work in rebuilding the rules, formatting, and forms, not to mention the reports.
Is there a magic formula in Alpha to be able to do this for me.

    Chuck,

I was just looking at the <tbl>.Rules_Get() function that lets you access all the field rules via xbasic. Apparently, you can edit and add field rules once you have a pointer to them. I have no experience with this function, but that seems like a start that could help. Good luck!

And I found another helpful function that you can use to edit the reports or forms in xbasic, a5_layout_design() discussed here: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...27&postcount=4

Again, no experience at all with this, but while the function appears to return a pointer to a report and its properties, it also opens it up in the editor.

Sounds like the linking is one to one.

Have you considered a mapped table of the 3 existing tables?

If you have all these tables already linked then they must be using a link id. I take it there is only one matching linked records for each. If so I would simply add new fields to match the tables in the master table and try update records in a default browse based on the set. Update based on setting the new field equals the matching table field. Then remove the tables from the set.

I'd like to say I should read more before posting my questions, but there is just so much reading and so little time.

Thanks for all your suggestions, they were good ones. The function I think I am going to try is the Copy Records Genie.
If I understand it correctly, it should be capable of copying records from one table to another and even bringing across the dictionary files. Field Rules, Forms, Reports, etc...

Re: Combining Multiple Tables into one - with rules

Copy Records will copy records "and even bringing across the dictionary files" from an existing table to a completely new table. But I'll be absolutely astounded if you can then run Copy Records again to bring more records from another existing table into the "new" (now existing) table that was created by the previous Copy Records action.

As far as I know, the only way "to combine multiple tables into 1 and retain the format of each table" is to start from one of the tables (or a copy of it) then copy down all the details from each of the other existing tables (A5Doc is probably best for this) and manually add them to the new table.

The only simple short cut I can think of is to highlight all the fields in an existing table (Design mode obviously), press Ctrl-C to copy them, then go to the new table in Design mode and use Ctrl-V to paste them in. (You might be able to use a Copy/Paste action from the toolbar but Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V (a) often work even when there is no toolbar option for them and (b) are so much faster to use that I never even check the toolbar to see if they exist anymore.)

Could a routine be created to automatically combine multiple tables? Absolutely. But it would probably take at least 4 times longer than just doing it manually and I haven't had the need to combine multiple tables in so long that it just isn't worthwhile.

Didn't read the whole thread but this should be much easier than you think.

If you are not xbasic inclined, you could use the "Join" operation to join 2 tables into one, then the third table to the joined table thus merging all three into one.
As to the field rules, this is a one time configuration. Is not even worth a script.

Re: Combining Multiple Tables into one - with rules

After a number of attempts and lots of learning, I found the only solution was to join, then join again.

it would be a nice feature but probably not used enough to join more than two tables at once.

                  Thanks guys.
