Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Poll. iPhone iPad android etc

As we indicated in another thread we are working on new capabilities to let you build native look/feel MOBILE apps using Alpha Five based on HTML 5, CSS and JavaScript (you can already run alpha five web apps in mobile browsers)

The goal is rapid development of database apps for mobile and cross platform compatibility I.e. Build once and have the app work across multiple devices such as apple android win7 mobile. Web os blackberry playbook and symbian (nokia)

Do you currently have a smart phone
Do you currently have an iPad
Are your users asking about mobile devices
Any other thoughts and comments would be welcome

    Thanks

Here is only one ready solution I know which offers native look and feel for all mobile devices without programming. I know there is available few html/javascript frameworks targeted to mobile devices but they are not easy solutions.

I think goMobi has the right look and feel. The point is that the page looks similar in Iphone and Motorola (sorry Motorola) and works exactly the same way.
(But If you study it you realize there is no backed database and the solution is quit simple.)

If I understand right we are looking here native look and feel not an ordinary web page look.

The Alphas solution should also take advantage of the phones property's.(address book, sms, photo, videos and so on). If not so the solution is useless.

      Richard,
I use both an Iphone and an Ipad and I would dearly love to be able to put database apps on to both especially the Ipad. I know it can currently be done via a web browser but 3g coverage is still very patchy so to be truly mobile it has to run natively on the device.
Having seen what an Ipad is capable of this has to be THE WAY to go.

My customers will always use the 3g connection to a central database. Real time is essential for them.

But like KKfin stated correctly the application should integrate with the communication possibilities of the mobile device: click on telephone number for example and call out.

Even better if also synchronisation of the address book of the device can be accomplished over the 3g connection.

My application will be used on mobile devices by:
+ technical/maintenance staff of real estate management companies
+ customers of inbound call centres who dispatch messages to them.

To my understanding what Richard Rabins is asking is about different types of devices and customers. Not about porting Alpha Software to mobile devices. Most devices have a different OS then Windows what is the default.

So I read the request were talking about the user interface and adjusting of grids etc. to that type of devices as mentioned in the orginal post from Richard Rabins.

If I am wrong please correct.

I guessed that might well be the case but we are allowed to dream aren't we.

Until good quality 3G or similar coverage is ubiquitous here in the UK (probably never or not in my lifetime !!) the use of such software that relies on a web connection is going to be limited to the big cities - that said there are places in many cities where you cannot make a phone call let alone access the web.

Go Richard burst my bubble and confirm that Eric's interpretation is correct :)

Are your users asking about mobile devices?

Yes they would like to use.

Any other thoughts and comments would be welcome

Many users got iPhones, but other Smartphones get up very fast. The new user want to use Word and Excel at home, in the office and on the road. They want to use Windows mobile.

                  Currently users are using Blackberries.

Models range from Curve to Bold, this week new user getting a Torch. Will be interesting to see pad device when it launches.

They have asked often if I can develop apps for them to access our enterprise system as they now do from pc.

Do you currently have a smart phone Android-based HTC Hero
Do you currently have an iPad No
Are your users asking about mobile devices In our environment, most users are on company intranet only.

I thought this thread was about building web solutions with Alpha that take advantage of phones os with the help of javascript.

If not then nothing interested to me. Alphas layout I leave to others.

Your right Kevin, that is not a follow up on the question I had.
It's more simple then a new complete dev box for mobile apps.
Orginal question is still about A5 webbrowser on Iphone,Ipad and some gadgets with Jquery to make it complete. I do my own stuff.

Otherwise I understand that there are asking there is request from market and see opertunities for Alphadevelopers that's also logical and good to ask when time is right.

                        thanks

I would like to see my applications have a nice UI for iOS and Android, maybe a new "mobile UI" added to the current UI options of A5(tabbed and page ui,) I currently use an Iphone and I see Tablets replacing most of the laptop/web market in near future.

This is absolutely key to our thinking.

We see these mobile devices as being ideal ways for business users to work with corporate data. And Yes the plan is to support all devices that are HTML 5, CSS and JavaScript -- which is the case for ALL mobile phones
