Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sorting by Multiple fields

I need to create a grid that allows users to sort by multiple fields.

One day they may need to sort by Salesperson + State then by Salesperson + Date.

But they might also want to sort by State + City + Date.

Is there a way to allow for multiple sort columns in Alpha?

I am using SQL, with Views, so I could create a bunch of fields in the view that combine the data in different ways. I'd then allow those fields to be sorted against - but I think that will end up looking like a big mess.

    Suggestions?

You may consider setting an initial filter for sales person and then they can click on the state column to sort.

You could also set the sort at the sql connection and create multiple grids accessible via buttons for each type of sort.

      In other words No. :)

The grid also allows the user to do various filtering.

So, yes, the user could select a single salesperson, then sort the grid by state. Then select another salesperson, and get a list sorted by state for the next salesperson, right on down the line.

I'd just like to be able to do it all in one grid at one time. This grid feeds a report, and I don't want to make the user printout multiple reports to get all the data they need.

I know I could create different grids and different reports for each, but it seems a shame to duplicate a grid/report just to get different sorts.

Perhaps you should set the filtering at the report level where you ask what they want to do and then run the filter against the report as opposed to the grid.

          Re: Sorting by Multiple fields

The grid is a much easier place for users to modify filters and sorting. They can make changes on the fly and see the results before printing a report. Much of the time, they won't even need to print the report at all because they have found the information they want in the grid.

The grid also has the advantage that it is easy to click on the data to go to related records and such to get more detailed information and they can expand the size of the grid to see more records on the screen if they want.

The grid is just way more flexible than any report, except for the problem with multiple sorts.

BTW: I have now requested this as a future enhancement in the appropriate place on the forum. I don't exactly know how often those ideas get picked up, but I am giving it a shot anyway.

I came across this old post in looking for this exact functionality.

I don't see the option looking through the grid properties and the documentation, so the request for future enhancement must not have worked :(

Any ideas how to sort multiple columns?? Or do I tell my client "alpha doesn't support that..."??

Edit: Didn't realize this was in the version 10 forum. I'm on version 11, so will post there.

You can do it at the table level where the query has the data sorted before presenting to user.
