Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha keeps adding a form filter expression

    There was something about this recently but I cannot find it.

    The attached pic shows there being a filter expression for the form. It is for the parent of the set. This should not be there. I keep erasing it and it keeps coming back. I am performing many table filters within code using the following:

    vfilter ="section="+quote(vsect_pick)
    topparent:tables:main.filter_expression = vfilter
    topparent:tables:main.order_expression = ""
    topparent:tables:main.query()

    It doesn't happen every time but periodically Alpha will write a base filter into the form. What does a boy have to do to keep the filter expression blank?

    This does not diagnose the underlying problem (which I think probably has to do with a filter in a set) but offers couple remedies:
    In the OnInit event use:
    <form>.BaseQueryRun() and make the filter .t.
    or open the form using:
    FORM.VIEWQUERIED() again using a filter .t.

      Happend to me in the past and I figured out, what happened. May be it is the same issue.
      • Call a Form with base filter
      • Change to the design mode
      • Make some changes
      • Save the form
      • Beng filter expression is saved
      I am using build 10.5 3387 3602 and I cant reproduce it.
      Change to the design mode of a form with a right click at the form tab is maybe a solution.

        Oh my gosh..... it must have been an alien possession, I'm sure of it! For you to suggest a BaseQuery... function. Oh my gosh the possession from the aliens must have been gripping and unescapable. ;)

        I believe I have solved the issue, at least for me. I don't believe that Alpha likes an empty filter expresssion field with a filled order expression field. So I just added into the filter expression an expression that resolves to true; 1=1, and the presence of that expression in the form filter expression has "blocked" the random addition/replacement of an unwanted expression.

        Thanks for your thoughts.

          I am not suggesting one.. but if one is placed there by alien beings, I am suggesting to take it out.. the alien way, i.e. fight fire with fire, i.e., run a basequery with a filter .t. which basically eliminates it. There are no great ways to purge those basequeries, more reason why I hate them. And my hate hasn't waned.

          And as to the filter/order issue.. I believe since v8 alpha does not approve of this illegal marriages.

            I had this problem too!!!.... idk if it's a bug or what but what happens is if you open a form using a query (like from a button on a form). Then go into design mode on that form the filter will stick to the tables when you leave design mode. Then when you want to open the form again from that button you get the "No Records in Query" error message. Just make sure you clear the filter before leaving design mode.

            I think this was fixed in one of the updates. Not sure though.. I just got so used to I always enter design mode from the Control Panel
