Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Forced Log-In after session timeout

When my session times out, nothing really happens except errors. How do I notify the user the session has timed out and force them to log-in again?

I have the same question. I get error 500 and have tried to reset the server for when that error gets generated, but this does not seem to work as expected. Is there another method to achieve this?

First, being logged in and session expiration are two separate items, not necessarily synchronous. Check Security Config to see if you have set Logout to be when the session expires.

And then, it depends on the errors you get. You need to either/both error trap and recreate all of your session variables if the session expires. Personally I recreate all of them. That means on every browser refresh I check for at least one session var. If that one is missing I cause the application to run through an A5W page named "run_once.a5w" that repopulates all session vars. This requirement really only applies if they are on a public web page and their session expires. If they are on a page that requires login and refresh, the fact that they are on a restricted page will cause the browser to redirect to the login page automatically.

The above information is relevant if you are talking about full browser page refreshes. But let me stop and ask what errors you are getting and where they are in the application when it happens, and is this inside a TabbedUI?

          Hi Steve,

We get the 500 error message if the user has logged in and has not moved to a page that requires a login within say 20 minutes. This is not a TabbedUI.

Just simply wanted to know how to get a new page to open instead of showing the error page that the user knows they have timed-out and need to log back in.

Keith, then you have not properly error trapped your session vars with something like if eval_valid("mysessionvar") then ...

Correct. How do I do that?

Re: Forced Log-In after session timeout

First figure out which session vars are causing the problem. Then for each:

                if eval_valid("mysessionvar")=.f.
your code to set the session variable
                end if

                or

                if eval_valid("my_test_sessionvar") =.f.
a5w_include("my page to set all session vars")
                end if

You indicate they are logged in but just to mention for anyone else, I can think of only a few situations where you need to set session variables if the person is not logged in.
