Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can I create something like this?

I asked support this directly, and just got a simple yes back. I need more then that.

I'm trying to create a web site similar to this one.

    http://www.qatarsale.com/EnMain.aspx

Not only that, but I want the person I'm building the web site for to be able to easily update the records (for instance if a new car model becomes available, I want them to be able to add that to a drop down list by themselves). I also want the drop down lists to change based on the previous selection, for instance, if a user selects 'toyota' in a drop down list in the search, I want the next drop down list to list only toyota models.

The idea is I leave them with a web site that they can easily administer themselves without my help.

If all this is possible, where can I start tutorial-wise? I've tried using PHPMagic, and it's unfortunately turned out to be a pretty rubbish program, with even worse support. They told me I could use PHPMagic to do what I'm asking, but it turns out after I bought it, that you can't even come close to simply recreating what I'm after.

Sorry if this sounds very vague, but I'm really stuck. I want to be able to build a useable website that uses MYSQL. I need to know that alpha 5 can do it.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

    Will,

That can certainly be done. Look as www.INeedWheels.com. I wrote that a couple years ago using V8. Now days, with V10 and an SQL backend, you can do even more and faster!

To see the photo in the datafield concept, look at www.dalharttxmls.com This is a V10 app using a dbf backend.

In both cases, the dealers and the realtors enter their own data and upload their own photos. Neither site has a webmaster.

      Hi Pat,

      Thank you!

I know this is a big ask, but what is the chance of me taking a look at the database structure for those? They're both exactly what I'm trying to achieve.

        Will,

I'm happy to answer (best I can!) specific questions of general interest on the message board, but, as you suggested, this is too much to answer. My customers have paid me to develop these applications and it would not be appropriate for me to give them away.

It has been suggested quite often on these boards to get the book Database Design for Mere Mortals. I picked up a used copy myself, and I believe it helped me design a better, more solid database.

Re: Can I create something like this?

            Hello

I am using version 9/2095_3264/web design.
I am able to create a view and show all records in a grid. I am also able to design search various fields as shown by Pat. As you can see in Pat's design the car model is not filtered to show only the models limiting to the make such as BMW, the list lists all the models available regardless of the make. Selwyn video shows how to do cascading drop down but based on a dbf where all data is stored, not based on a view combinig few tables. Is it possible, I am sure it is, and where do I insert the filter command.

            Thanks.

I understand, I'd probably do the same. ;)
