Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bob Moore Mobile Web Presentation

    Hi All,

Just watched Bob Moore's presentation on mobile web apps (available under announcements). He was able to demo some very exciting technologies.

As Bob mentions, it is currently possible to wrap Alpha grids in a a mobile 'wrapper' to create a native look and feel, but would require learning the programming language of that particular technology (i.e. JQueryMobile)

During the video, Bob also mentions that Alpha is working on the ability to create grids where you can simply activate the mobile features without coding (unless you want to customize).

On that note, had a few questions...

1)When would this technology be released by Alpha? (the sooner the better!)
2)Will it include some form of emulator so you can test your mobile Grid as you develop on your desktop? Or would we need to download another emulator like the one used by Bob in his demonstration?
3)Would the current security setup used for web apps (i.e. session variables) apply for mobile applications?

If anyone has the inside scoop would be much appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Scott

Re: Bob Moore Mobile Web Presentation

I also watched Bob Moore's presentation. It was nice to see what is coming and that Alpha has plans for this important segment. Thanks to Bob Moore. Mobile Web seems to be the (main) road with Alpha if I did understand right.

It is good to notice that there is a clear difference between Native vs Mobile Web applications: The Business Model. The big question is here: HOW to make money with Mobile Web. Today you just can't. How to get payments from (million)user(s)???

With Native Applications there is already a money making model for this and it works. You can make money with mobile software but just with native applications(micropayments with phone bills and so on).

But as Bob said you can DO Native Applications (With Alpha?)

        1. The release date had not been determined. We are aiming for something in Q1 of next year.

        2. You can test with any of the simulators. I use the iPhone / iPad simulator bundled with Apples SDK.

        3. The security framework will work just fine with our mobile components.

If you want to build a true native app you will be able to using PhoneGap as Mauricio mentioned.

Please keep in mind that all of the components that are currently shipping are not optimized for mobile and it's tough to build a native like experience now, even as I have done with my proof of concept code. That will change when we ship our mobile components.
