Hi All,
Watching Bob Moore's presentation got me thinking about mobile phone emulators. I want to ensure that some of my web pages are suitable for mobile phone use, but how to test? I don't want to have a "live" site in order to test, nor do I want to run up a lot of data charges using a real phone...
Anyway, I did some research and within about 15 minutes you can be running your Alpha web app on a mobile phone emulator, all from your desktop/local host. Here is how to do it...
1) You need Alpha 5 version 10 and the app server...
2) Download the Android SDK kit at http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
3) Once you have installed it you still need download the latest Android SDK kit, but it steps you through the process (the initial download is just the installer).
4)Create a new Virtual Device (I included a screen shot of my setup)
5) Start Alpha 5 and launch the app server.
6) Back on the android side, launch your new Virtual device.
7) The phone emulator should now be up..start up the browser
8) Here is the one tricky part,to launch your Alpha web pages in the emulator you can't use local host or 127.0.0.1. Instead use 10.0.2.2
i.e. 10.0.2.2/index.a5w
9)That's it, your Alpha web app is now visible on the phone emulator...
Cheers,
Scott
