Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What field type for embedding uploaded pdf file?

I try to get my File Upload Feature Pack working.
The simple version, with linked filename, works.
But I would like to use multiple Upload, and then I need blob, I think.
What field type do I need for that? OLE? If so, what should be the fied lenght?

Or is it safer (more reliable) to keep the files outside tables?

    Thanks.

Re: What field type for embedding uploaded pdf file?

Reliability should not be a concern, provided you use the right database engine.

Microsoft Sharepoint is based on storing all type of files inside SQL. Yes, I know, Microsoft is not a reference when talking of reliability...

However I see some advantages keeping the files outside the database:

Displaying the pdf files in your application is much easier if they are on a file.

You can control the name the file will have when a user downloads it. Incredibly, the file download Feature Pack, does not allow you to set the filename (dynamically) if it is stored inside the database...

      Thanks.

When using the A5 dbf tables, what field type do I need to store the files in?

I cannot help you since I use SQL.

Be careful if you use A5 dbf since you can reach the 2Gb limit per table rather easily if you store files inside the table.

            Eric,

I use the internal A5 tables. I think it should be the OLE type, but I don't know which field lenght I should put in...
I can't find any documentation on this...

Ok, so if I use A5 format, it would be better to link the files to table fields, I guess. A pity, though, that I cannot use the multiple upload feature in the case.

I think you should ask one of the guys how worked alot with DBF.
OLE is not the right type ? is that not used for activeX automation. I would pick Memo as best option and try that.
HMTL and Rich text have other purpose so I believe.

As mentioned if the file size for Memo also is limited to 2 GB that is not a real option for you best is to use the link solution.
If you still want to use DBF and multiple upload a email to Selwyn "howto" and I am sure he will help you. ? Are the video's from Selwyn not helping most of the time there is 90-99% of the answers howto

                  Hi Eric,

I'll do that. Thanks for the advise.

I think you should ask Alpha about the file type, and if you do get an answer I would be interested to know also

Re: What field type for embedding uploaded pdf file?

                        Answer from Selwyn:

if you want to embed the data in the table (not recommended, but you can do it if you want), then you need a binary field. A5 does not have an explicit 'binary' field - so you could use 'bmp image' as the field type because that is a binary field.

If you want to store the filename of the image in the table then you just need a character field.
I keep using the linked field. That's a lot simpler.
