Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    printing pdf in windows 7

Since switching to Windows 7 I can no longer print report pdf's (see attached jpgs) I have reinstalled Alpha, run most recent update (updates now take 10 minutes to complete, but I'll leave that for another thread) and run InstallAmyuniPrinters (which said it installed correctly) If I wait long enough the second dialog say's "Not responding" and then I have to close alpha to continue) For now I have to copy files to laptop with vista to print reports

Check the threads below. This has been discussed before. I believe Win7 broke something in Amyuni's drivers but I think you just have to change the compatibility mode if I remember correctly.

I tried all of the ideas in other threads including

"1. Run the InstallAmyuniPrinters.exe as Admin and in XP compatible modes.
      2. Set all A5v9 icons to run in Admin and XP modes.
      3. Re-install A5v9 and patch over itself."

and reinstalling in root directory instead of program file (x86)

the only difference is now I have to use ctrl-alt-del to start the task manager to get out of the lock up instead of just closing alpha

You have to move to V10 to print to PDF in W7
        Its a completely different driver

          Hi All,

I have just printed a report as PDF with a V9 Runtime on Windows 7.

I first set up the shortcut to run in compatibilty for Vista Pack 2 then run once as an administrator.

I tried that, same result as setting as Xp, locked up and had to use task manager to get out, I also tried removing alphafiveprinterv4 and letting program reload it, it reloads but after the lockup I looked at the printer and it showed "printing error" but not what the error was, so I deleted the printing job, I have noticed that the attempt at creating the pdf does create a 0 byte pdf file that is left open so I can't even delete it till I reboot the computer. I have been using V10 but since last posting said he was using V9 I tried that and before it even tries to print I get an error "could not open OLE object cdintfex.cdintdex. Not really using V9 anymore but thought I would try anything, I really need this to work

You definitely have Adobe Reader loaded? I find that V10 hangs when printing to PDF if our clients do not have this loaded.

Re: printing pdf in windows 7

Yes and all other adobe files work fine, I found a link to a partial solution URL="http://support.intuit.ca/quickbooks/en-ca/kb/printing/print-forms-and-printer-setup/2773.html" but one of the steps "Select Local Port and click the New Port button then Enter Nul: for the new port name and click OK and Close the Printer Ports window." does not work, after rebooting the new port disappears, while trying to figure that out I changed the port to "print to file" and then the print function works and creates the file but I have to enter the full path in an ask box every time. Not a good solution, but at least it shows the printer driver will work, it just does not like the default LPT1 port selection and won't save the Nul: port as suggested in the above link. At least I'm making some progress

I also tried ports LPT2 & 3 and COM1 thru 4, I looked at AlphaFivePrinterV4 on my Vista and it is set to LPT1 and works, I found another reference to problem on a quicken site and they suggested naming it Pdf1, but that acts the same ac Nul:, it gets lost when computer is rebooted (I tried it before rebooting and still didn't work) Since LPT1 works on Vista, and It sounds like it works on some Win 7 computers (from other responses) I'm guessing there is a problem with some win 7 computers or a setting I don't know about. I can still get it to work using Print to file (and I found you don't have to reboot to get it to accept that change) so there must be a way to set port so it will work

Re: printing pdf in windows 7

I came up with a temporary solution that does allow a way to save a pdf, I set the printer port to "Save to File" then when the report is loaded I copy the full file path to the clipboard and when the ASK box pops up I paste the path then the file is created and saved, this does not work with the "print file" button in the print toolbar so the only way to print the report is save the PDF then open it and print it.
All of this is very unsatisfactory and I hope someone comes up with a solution, but at least I can save and print reports, I can't wait to have to explain all of this to clients, I hate computer upgrades

Re: printing pdf in windows 7

We have loaded our V10 apps on to hundreds of PCs and the PDFs work in most instances but every so often we will have a client that has problems.

This was a cure for one of our clients.

                      1) Make sure that you are logged in as a user with administrator rights.
                      2) Select Control Panel, and click Printers.
                      3) Right-click the Alpha Five Printer icon
                      4) Select the Ports tab, then click the Add Port... button.
                      5) Select Local Port and click the New Port... button.
                      6) Enter NUL: for the new port name and click OK. Close the Printer Ports window.
                      7) Ensure that the NUL: port is selected in the Ports list.
                      8) Select the Advanced tab.
                      9) Select the Spool print documents radio button to make the options below it clickable.
                      10) Clear (uncheck) the box labeled Enable advanced printing features.
                      11) Select the Print directly to printer radio button again.
                      12) Click the Apply button, and then click OK.

I had found that procedure before, but I tried it again and it still does not work on my computer (still locks up on initialize) and even if it did work, the port disappears when computer reboots. In addition I have reinstalled alpha, reinstalled printer, removed printer and let alpha reinstall it, I am at a loss, the only way I can get it to work is by selecting print to file for a port (see previous post)

                          Crian,

I have an app that I origanally developed in V8 and have it not with the V10 Runtime. I have litterly hundreds of users that run this app in Win 7 and the reports I use display before printing. Users and I print reports all the time without any problem. You might want to download the latest driver for the anyiumfile. Abobe has been putting out a lot of updates for reader of late.

Good thought, I even found an alpha wiki help source that said alpha just updated driver from 4.0.0.7 (which I had) to 4.0.1.2 so I once again removed alpha and reinstalled with high hopes that this would finally solve the problem, at first I thought it had failed, but then I followed previous idea to change port to NUL: and that worked, I saved several pdf's but then I rebooted and once again the printer lost the NUL port and printing failed, but then even after adding the NUL port again it still fails, once again I am back to using FILE as the port and manually entering the path, this still works. For some reason the computer is messing with some settings on reboot and screwing things up

Is the problem appearing on multiple PCs or just one specific machine?

I'm anxious to see you find a cure because every so often one of our clients will experience similar PDF problems.
