Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

You can try the steps outline on this document:

        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/251192

Truthfully Alpha should be doing this on the install of the Application Server. If the application server was a service you would have the ability to easily script to start/stop/restart the service without the need for 3rd party tools as well as keep it running if you log out.

Not sure why they don't given Apache and IIS are both services.

          Not sure why they don't
Its been explained before that this is not something that is just 'added' to an existing application but takes major rewrite. It may come if they do rewrite the web server. Using AlwaysUp is a big leap compared to 'just running it as a service'. AU provide a ton of advantages including automatic restart based on conditions (high CPU, etc.) and notification if there is a problem brewing, and a lot more.

Find the How-To in the Alphapedia. I just set a Win2003 server up to run Alpha's server as a service and it's working great. Only took about 10 minutes to set up after I downloaded the Win Resource Kit. Cost $0.

There may be some gotchas, but I haven't found them yet.

                Hi Steve,

Do you perhaps know wether using AlwaysUp allows the Was to work correctly when downloading documents that are referenced with mapped drives (outside webroot)? Documentpath are in my application stored in the mysql database with the mapped drive

I you choose to run the Was as a service (as described in the MS document) this seems to be impossible (got that information from 2 independent systemmanagers).

Running the WAS at as the userprogramm at a server has no problems with that.

                thanks in advance,

                Ger Kurvers

                  Ger,

I download and upload files to and from my server to both inside and outside my document root with no problem and have always used AlwaysUp. So I can't imagine any problem. You can run their program for free for 30 days, so you can try it out.

When launched from Always Up, I cannot use the Application Server user interface.

                    Did you solve this problem?

I assume you mean the green icon in the system tray. It doesn't appear if you are on a 64-bit Windows server. But right click on the service in AlwaysUp and select "Restart 'server' in this Session".

For these situations, only two remedies I know of.

                          - Use AlwaysUp to Restart "in this session"
                          - If you only have one instance of the WAS running, just start another instance of WAS right from the Start menu. Configure the server using that icon in the system tray, it will affect the running server.
                          - Manage the server from the xml configuration file instead of the system tray icon.

You have to restart the WAS when you make a change to the configuration anyway, except for email setup changes.

AlwaysUP is a positive tool but if your running multiple instances you would like to see [inside] a monitor tool where you can manage the instances on the server directly.
                            Maybe an idea for V11.

BTW V11 is based on VS2010 that gives [possible] opertunity to include almost anything you need or like, big advantage to vendors to interact with AlphaSoftware on SDK level.

I had to stop using always up due to it not allowing reports against a SQL backend when A5 server was running inside as a service. I have always been annoyed that WAS doesn't run as a service out of the box, but it does so many other things so well..... Who can complain.
