Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Setting up a remote MYSQL server

I have recently bought server space to publish my alpha five project.

I am using Alphafive with MYSQL

I understand how to upload my Alpha Five project.

I don't understand how I upload my database.

My thoughts were to install mysql server on the remote server space.

From that point... I don't understand how to get the database off my hard drive and upload it to the mysql server.

    Any thoughts

I've not done this... yet... but, using MySQL Workbench, could you create a connection to your remote database? Then using the import and export tools you could export your local database and then open the connection to your remote database and import.

Where is your remote database? Is it hosted? The host may have tools to import your local export.

You could also try using SQLYog. They have a free version. Assuming that your server has port 3306 open, you could create a connection locally and then on the remote server and copy the whole database.

There are other ways also, but that may work for you.

        Mysql setup

you will need the mysql server running on the remote box
your database as you call it is just a small part to the equation
it is not a data server just some data tables

from where you have the tables at now do a sql dump to get the table layout and any data in it save as yourdata.sql whatever
fire up the new mysql server create the database and import the ***.sql file into it and it creates all fields and puts your data into it
take a look at mysql control center or heidisql administrator they are free

pretty good control easy to use and free

          Joel,

I use Navicat for MYsql. This is very easy in that tool. You create a remote connection to that server and a new database and you can actually drag and drop from the local copy to the remote. You can also export data and definitions and import on remote. You need to have the tools on both sides though.

Also with navicat you could do a backup then restore on the remote machine.

Re: Setting up a remote MYSQL server

              Hi everybody,

              Thanks for your advice!

I already own Navicat, so I will use that as my tool of choice.

First question: Do I have to purchase a separate license for Navicat that to run it on my hosted remote server?

Second question: I am under the assumption that I need to set up Navicat on my remote server, and my home server for the two to talk to one another.

When I am setting up Navicat on my hosted remote server, for a new connection do I set up Navicat there to use localhost?

Re: Setting up a remote MYSQL server

You only need to setup Navicat locally.
It can connect to your remote server if port 3306 is open on the firewall at your VPS.
                Alan

Basically you are running Navicat locally and copying data from local to your remote server. It's really using MySQL at both end.s

Re: Setting up a remote MYSQL server

                  Thanks Alan,

My administrator had this to say this about port 3306

"Nevertheless, port 3306 is closed at the edge of our network (closed to the Internet). If you want, we can open it (That could be a security risk since anybody in the Internet could hit that port directly)"

Should I have it opened? Are there big security risks to this if my root password is set and secure?

I did manage ftp up copies of my database and load them into a copy of Navicat I installed there...

                    Joel,

Go ahead open it only give access from your IP. Solves that problem. Or have them open upload and close it. Or use your FTP
then sync with the local Navicat.

I believe port 3306 would need to be open at your remote server only, though I guess I could be wrong.

                      Alan

Yes you could upload the file and then import using Navicat on your server, but then you really should have a Navicat license for the server also.

Re: Setting up a remote MYSQL server

Thanks for the response. I got the databases imported.

Now I need help getting Alpha Five to communicate with the database.

I do not have Alpha Five running on my remote server... Just Alpha Five Server.

From my desktop, in Alpha Five
                        1) I created a new profile in Alpha Five, using the FTP settings.

Under named AlphaDOA connection strings I have:

                        {A5API=MySQL,Server='localhost',Port='3306',UserName='root',Password='xxxxx',Database='wtsql_mysql'}

Is this part set up right? Or do I need to install Alpha five on my remote desktop and publish it from there.

                        2) Next I uploaded a simple test page that doesn't use the mysql databases. It publishes fine, and I can go to that page.

                        3) When I tried uploading a page that uses the mysql database I get the following:

                        500 Internal Server Error
                        "Script Error
                        Error:Script:inc_header_setvar.a5w line:11
                        ErrorOut(vErrorMsg)
                        Function is not recognized"

                        Any suggestions here?

the error you have is related to the AlphaToGO Framework a function is not found on the system , did you publish everything correct and on the right place?
Or you should contact Steve for help.
