Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Creating separate DBFs based on code in original DBF

I receive a DBF file from a customer were the records in the file have to be separated in to separate DBFs based on a code in the file. The field is a 5 character field. For example, in the file for today, there are 3 different values in the field - 12345, 67890, 97531 - thus 3 DBFs have to be made, named 12345.DBF, 67890.DBF, 97531.DBF. Some days there are 25 different values in the file, so doing the separating manually is time consuming and prone to error. How would I program this separating?

    Jim

Are you actually using the DOS Alpha 4 or is this a mis-post?

There are better tools to do this in the Windows version (Alpha 5)

There are ways to do this in Alpha 4, but finding someone that is skilled enough to do it might be as difficult as doing the task itself.

Is 25 different values the max? Alpha 4 has scripting in the application section of the system, so the script can be setup and run as needed.

      Hi Art,

Yes, I am using Alpha4 version 6. I have looked at Alpha5, but we need a DBF utility, and Alpha4 has been our choice for it's ease of use, since Version 2. This latest utility need is beyond our hands-on knowledge of the product. There is no known limit to the number of possible values in any one file, but so far we have not seen more than 25. So your recommendation is the study the documentation about Applications?

Definitely look at the scripting part of applications.

Re: Creating separate DBFs based on code in original DBF

          Hi Jim,

I'm still using Alpha4v7 which is much the same program as v6. I have wrote quite a few scripts in the past and I am more than happy to have look at what you require. Is there any chance of a copy (edited if necessary) of the file you get and a bit more info on the file as this would help if we are looking at the same data during any correspondance we may have.

          Cheers,
          Keith

              Hi Jim,
You can either attach the sample to the message or send it direct to my email. The interest is in the file you receive, this is the one that we need to work on.

              Cheers,
