I'm toying with writing my first web application. It would be a very simple health record for a breed of dogs. There would be about 10 body systems. The user would go from one to another checking specific points and adding narrative where called for. It's really pretty simple but for two things.
1. All users would sign in with an ID and password. However, records could only be created or edited by the breeder or owner. How do I create a security system that in effect has various levels of security depending on the specific record. Then, how do I set this record access to allow not only the creator of the record but one other person? Say the breeder created the record. Eveyone else can look at the record. Along comes the owner of the dog and wishes to update the record as well. How does he gain access to the record? This is the biggest issue.
2. I have a public access database that has some of the discrete pieces of data already in it. We collect hip radiographic results, a couple of genetic tests for eye conditions....stuff like that. This database is supported by a SQL server at GoDaddy. Can the the new application and the SQL database exchange data (both on GoDaddy for instance) when creating or editing records so that both databases are equal in the data elements they share. This would have to be a two-way exchange since eye data is updated each year and the data can not be different.
As I said, I'm just toying with the idea. These are the two biggest issues that I've come up against so far.
Thanks.
