Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Tom, in converting an app from V8 to V10, I found that the method is unreliable, and in cases where it didn't work, I used a different approach.

So then you agree that something isn't right with the function?

                I'll set it up today.

                Now the fun...

I went into Alpha Sport to duplicate my issue. I copied the vendor table to dupvend, and removed several records.

for the vendor form, I modified the "Blank" menu and added a "Test" menu Item.

In the on_fetch event of the form, I placed the following code

                Code:
                dim vnd as P
                vnd = table.current()

                if exist(vnd.vendor_id,"dupvend","Vendor_Id")
                	:vendor_Information.MenuItemEnable("Test",.T.)
                  else
                	:vendor_Information.MenuItemEnable("Test",.F.)
                end if
                parentform.Resynch()
                end
...works like a champ. Now how do I submit a bug when it works fine in AlphaSport???

Could this be a timing issue because My Customer Information set is fairly complex?

                Any Thoughts?

                  Re: Menu Item

good question - however, another heads up - I have had a lot of problems with resynch - in general no longer use it

the issue I had with exist() was/is that the problems I had would occur in one use and not in another - i.e., is unreliable - I was using it in a long running looping script when I first ran into the issue

                    Martin,

Like I said to Gabe, The issue wasn't with the "exist", that is performing just fine, It has to do with the command "<formname>.MenuItemEnable()". In either scenario, found or not found, the second time we hit the command, the ENTIRE program (Alpha5) hangs up and needs to be canceled to clear it. I just submitted a bug report, but I feel they will say they can't replicate the problem...

You didn't say how you are using the debugger so not necessarily.....unless while in debugger you stepped through each part of the script which allows each line to complete...this helps eliminate timing issues from an issue.

Just wanted to make sure a possible cause was not bypassed...

                        Re: Menu Item

I placed the "Debug()" into the "on_fetch" script just before the "If" statement and then did an F12 to run through each line. When it hit the <formname>.MenuItemEnable(), Wham!

                          Hi Tom,
Again, probably just semantics but if the issue happens when on the Menu line ("...when it hit ...") then it could be the prior line that caused the issue.

                            Definitely semantics.

I should have said "When I press F12 after arriving on the <formname>.Menuitemenable()" line.

That was my gut feeling but couldn't swear to it as I am not able to test and that's why I asked you to run a simple script just to enable/disable an item from a button without the if statement.
                              The debug is misleading here.
If it's a timing issue, which I think it is, I am sure you know how to deal with that.

                                Just tested that theory.

                                One button has
                                Client_Reg.MenuItemEnable("Photo",.T.)

                                the other has
                                Client_Reg.MenuItemEnable("Photo",.F.)

Push either button the first time on the form, and the appropriate action happens. Push the other button on the same form, same record and everything locks up.

See attached. First is the form on the initial "fetch". Second shows menu item disabled. When I pressed the "enable" button ("Script"), Alpha locks up and cannot even <alt> prnt scrn to capture image!
