Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha 5 Home Edition license?

Yes, I have Version 7, lost my free upgrades to version 8, 9, and 10 when my computer crashed this past September. Support would not supply the upgrades again. But version 7 works okay for me.

Anyway, I also run A5 Home Edition on a second computer and at least the registration window runs on Windows 7 asking for the license number so maybe it will run on Windows 7? Initial problem is that I have no record of the original license key and cannot get past the registration window.

Is the license number stored in any directory of my computer that I can easily access? I wrote an app for this years ago and it works perfectly. I want to move this db and application to a newer computer and I suspect I am in for a lot of challenges if I have to run this old app on Alpha 7.

Any idea where I can find the license key stored on the old computer? The old computer is still running but it's getting really old.

    Check the registry

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 7.0\USER\
    There can be only one.

Thanks for the information but no dice. Didn't find it there. Tried running version 4 though and even with the compatibility options I couldn't get it to run on my Win 7 machine.

I copied over my essential files (.dbf) and opened them with version 7 and am trying to modify my app to run on the Win 7 machine but cannot even save a label that I can later see in my control panel. Makes no sense to me at all.

I design a very basic crude mailing label, save it as test 1, it changes names to test 1, then I close it but cannot see it under the LABEL tab in the control panel? Yet the form copied over is right there under the FORM tab. This is going to be a long port to Windows 7.

Re: Alpha 5 Home Edition license?

If the other machine is still working, start alpha and look at the help/about at the top.

Suggest you install under the c:\ drive, not program files and see how it goes. I have runtime in v7 running on win7 and it works ok for me, but not on a 64 bit machine(not so well). That app is being changed and if I were to use some of the features other in alpha, the app may not work.

          Just an additional FYI....

Although most applications will run without a hitch outside of Program Files and in the root of the OS (c drive), there are times when say a file has to be created and Win7 will not let this happen anywhere on the root drive except within My Documents. As a result of this I always recommend placing an app into My Documents or on a separate partition/drive.
