Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    line breaks in a textarea

    I have a custom control for sending an email. I need to have line breaks in the textarea. <BR /> does not work, nor does\n\r.

    Here is the code i am using:

    Message_render = "<textarea name=\"MESSAGE\" class=\"GradientBlueTextarea\" id=\"DLGEMAILSEND_MESSAGE\" cols=\"50\" rows=\"4\" >test<BR />Test</textarea>"

    Any ideas

    What do the authors of the custom control suggest?

      Tom - a custom control is a type of control in a grid.

      Larry - try using a crlf(). I haven't tried it, but it's the next obvious attempt I think.

        Thanks, Steve.

        Couldn't tell from the post if the user was working in the web app server or on a desktop app using an html memo.

        The term "custom control" can refer to many third party controls, so that's what I had in mind.

          And no one reads the How to post in this area...

          1.Give your posting a clear, specific title
          2.At the top of the post, say what version of Alpha Five you are asking about
          3.Right after that, say whether you are asking about web or desktop applications
          4.There is no need to say that you are new to Alpha: that is what this area is for, after all.
          There can be only one.

            Your custom control just creates a text area for the user to type in to. Nothing you do in creating or populating that textarea will decide how your email looks when received. Somewhere else on your dialog/grid must be some method that sends the mail. BR only works if the email is being sent as HTML. Crlf() only works if you are sending it as text.

              I am building a web application using Alpha 5 version 10.

              I have created a dialog that will allow the user to input a subject and a message.

              Within the message body (Textarea) I want to auto populate several fields from the grid the user is on. I wanted to have the typed message and several fields after that.

              For example:

              This is the message with the text the user typed in.

              Customer Name: John Doe
              Home Phone: 999-999-9999

                Re: line breaks in a textarea

                Did you solve the problem in your first post?

                Although you could probably figure out how to pre-populate a textarea, this might not be the best approach. I assume you want to pouplate this so it gets saved to the record, and gets printed in a report. You can do that in the CanInsert Event, automatically append that information to the field that is assigned to that textarea.

                In the CanInsert event, it might look like this:

                DataSubmitted.myfield = DataSumbitted.myfield + crlf() + "Customer Name: " + DataSumbitted.mynamefield

                Assuming the mynamefield is on the same grid, or if not referenced from wherever it exists.

                  This will work.

                  Code:
                  name = "Marlon Williams"
                  address = "101 Main Street"
                  City = "New York"

                  'Write Xbasic code here that returns the HTML to be displayed by this control
                  Message_render = "<textarea name=\"MESSAGE\" class=\"GradientBlueTextarea\" id=\"DLGEMAILSEND_MESSAGE\" cols=\"50\" rows=\"4\">" + name + <<%html%
                  &nbsp;
                  %html% + address + <<%html%
                  &nbsp;
                  %html% + City + <<%html%
                  </textarea>
                  %html%
