Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Freeze Column Titles In Grid

Since there is no option to freeze column titles so they remain in view when scrolling, does that mean it can't be done? When I searched I only found one thread about it with no conclusions.

I would presume that in regular html this would not be possible but it might be achievable maybe using an iframe to contain the "scrolling" part of a grid but positioning could be tricky?

Someone with jQuery knowledge might be able to implement something like this:

Regardless, I'd love to have this feature as well.

It looks doable within css. See this site. http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menu/tablescroll.html If you look at the page source it looks fairly straight forward.

I'm pretty sure that you can't use this in the context of a grid.

That was my first thought, too, but I wasn't confident enough to say it.

I'm also not the one who could pull it off, but I've got ideas for those with more skills than I.

It would seem to me that there would be a way to use one of the Javascript System Events in the grid to get the HTML from the grid's column headers and then pop up a modeless floatting window with that same HTML on top of the grid's column headers. Not totally clean, but might come close...

Perhaps easier, you could have an A5w page with the column headers hardcoded in an HTML specified-width table, then have the grid open in a div below that with hardcoded column widths and no column headers. Assuming the grid in the div had scrollbars, it would have the basic functionality but not the features of calling grids directly, the click on column headers to sort functionality, the "liquid" nature of columns to expand and contract depending on data and window width, etc.

Re: Freeze Column Titles In Grid

THe way I have done it is in the Master template. I create a table and in the row directly above the grid component I have the column labels hardcoded ( a real pain in the #$$ to match the column width to the grid column widths, trial and error ) then in the next row I enclose the grid in a div with a preset height and overflow set to auto.. It is not quite as pretty as the previous example but it does keep everything on one page.

I was able to steal the column labels from the html in a preview and insert those into the row above the grid. It maintains the colors of the css style but the widths don't match any longer. If someone could figure out how to keep the width format doing this would be a breeze.

I also moved the footer to a row below the grid component. It looked great just like the example. It worked well in working preview mode but when I published the grid it wold not work. The navigator and submit buttons did not function. I have not had a chance to figure out why but if someone else knows please share.

Here is a sample grid without overflow

That looks good, Frank. I'm a bit confused though, because if I understand right, the grid is in a div and everything else around it is hardcoded. Did you add the HTML and corresponding javascript actions to control navigation and column sorting as well, or did these functions still work with the Master Template method...?

The navigation controls functioned in the working preview mode but did not work after publishing. I know there is a fairly simple way to change the code so that they will function when published, I have too many things going on to sort that out right now.

What I did was set up the grid with the column headers and navigation bar. did a preview, opened the html window, copied the code for the column labels, and navigation bar sections, pasted that into the table that I created in the master template. Then I turned off the column headers and navigation toolbar in the grid.

As I said earlier when I copied and pasted the column information into the table in the master template it lost the width formatiing so I had to specify by trial and error the column widths. I am sure this can be sorted out in css but I don't know enough to do it.

The way I have the grids I use in my app is that I just leave the navigation bar on the grid. It does not look as nice as the example but it does keep it all on 1 page and locks the column names.

This would be a great feature pak.

I agree that it would be a great feature pack. As I read through the ideas and think of all the grids I will have in my app, I don't think I want to spend the time trying to match grid columns to a master template of column titles. Might make me crazy, plus I think my knowledge is too much in its infancy to attempt it.
