Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New Record JavaScript

    I created a button in the free space below the grid. There are two JavaScripts, one to open a grid and another to enter a new record when the detail view opens. {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord();

    After saving everything and publishing, the grid opens but not in new record mode.

    What am I missing?

      The code is located in the JavaScript of the Button Action. There are two actions there, one to open the grid and another to put it into new record mode.

        Probably line 2 fires before the grid is rendered. Besides, if that's the line you used, Alpha interprets that as referring to the parent grid, not the grid you are calling. Try putting that line in the child grid's OnRender event or something.

          First you need to have your detail view fields and parameters defined in the grid. If you put {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord(); in the onclick event of a button or image when clicked it will open the detail view, as defined in the grid, with a new record. You do not need to open another grid first.

            These are the steps I took to create the button:
            1. In the Grid Properties
            2. Action Buttons
            3. Click button on right of property to bring up Action Button Editor
            4. Click Add Action Button, gave name, click OK
            5. In the Button Action - Javascript; click button on right to bring up Edit OnClick Event
            6. Click Add New Action
            7. Select Open Grid Component - OK
            8. Click Grid Name Button->Select Button->Click on grid name->OK. OK, OK, OK
            9. Select Add New Action
            10. Inline Javascript-> OK
            11. Click Insert Grid Method
            12. {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord();
            13. Save->OK

            I agree, it should work but it doesn't.

              Re: New Record JavaScript

              You don't need steps 6,7,8.

              Under Component Type, Grid is Read Only, Select Grid contains a 'Detail View' Part? Then set up the detail view properties in the grid.

              When you click on the action button the {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord() method opens the detail view in a window or a div depending on how you have it set with the new record.

              If you are not wanting to use the detail view to add records and want to open a new grid to add records then you can't use the {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord() method.

                Well then, Frank, SHAZAM!!! I can eliminate a grid, maybe two. Ahhhh, this stuff is a lot more fun than the straight desktop and I thought that was a blast.

                  Hhhmmm... If all you want to do is add a record to a grid, you don't need an action button at all. It's already built into the grid functionality.

                    I agree, but, I have some single record form grids and I like having a button / image in the navigation toolbar that when clicked will add a new record. Similar to the way I had used on the desktop. I appeared to me that Kenn was trying to accomplish the same.
