Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    math error

I have what should be a simple calculated field on a grid.
    baldue = Amt_Charged+Amt_Debit-Amt_Received-Amt_Credit

The problem is A5 returns the correct (expected) result on some occassions, and an erroneous (unexpected) result on others.

I am currently using build 3739.

The image I uploaded shows the value of the fields, the calculated field expression, and even a desktop form showing this does not happen in the desktop environment.

Is there some rule involving field names I am unaware of ?
Is this truly a bug ? (the last time I reported something as a bug, I was told the error was in my logic)

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Re: math error

This happens due to the way javascript handles math. See this link for more detail. http://blog.unidev.com/index.php/200...in-javascript/ What I do, since I'm using the math on dollars and cents, is to use the round() function to get the answer I'm looking for. Such as:
    Code:
    round((ihtotal-CASH_IN-CHECKS_IN-CARD_IN-INSURANCE_DUE-ON_ACCOUNT),2)

This is a bit worse than what is described in that link.
In the row with J1100084 (2nd row), Baldue should be 0, not 8.

          It almost worked.
Fixed row 2, but now I have a couple other rows that are wrong.

Yes I see. At first glance it appeared to me that Amt_Received-Amt_Credit was occuring first. Just a habit to control the order of operations.

Could be that I'm frazzled from trying different ways to rework this.

I think I've tried about a halfdozen ways to rewrite it; fixing some rows but not others.

The data in the columns used to calculate baldue is not touched by users.

                    Gregg,

If you go to W3Schools.com and use their online javascript editor and put in 20.14-13.75-6.39 the result you'll get is 8.881784197001252e-16 which is what you show as the result in your attachment. Round 8.881784197001252e-16 to two decimal places and you get 0.00, the answer you're looking for. Actually you can round to 14 decimal places and still get zero for an answer. Once you go to 15 places you'll get .000000000000001 as an anser. So, in summary, I still think you have a floating point math error that is inherent to javascript. Did you try adding round(your_amount,2) to your equation? It should fix your problem.

It's clear as mud to me, but I was taught at one time to trust PFM.

I experimented a bit with round() last night, but my logic had 8.something being rounded up to 9 or down to 8.

Your solution does work which is ultimately what I was after.

I appreciate the help and even more that you stuck with me while my logic kept saying it won't work.
