Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Use session variable for UploadFolder in File Upload feature

    Since we deal with multiple tenants, we need to store their uploaded files in their own separate folders. I have a session variable, __protected__uploadfolder, that holds the path that should be used to store uploads for the client. However, I can't figure out how to use the session variable in the UploadFolder field using the File Upload window that opens with the feature pack for File Upload. (see screenshot) Since the Xbasic code created by Alpha puts quotes around that UploadFolder path, putting that session variable there just causes Alpha to create a folder in the web root that is named session.__protected__uploadfolder .

    Actually, right now I am putting a hard coded (absolute) path into the UploadFolder field that is a folder to hold the file temporarily. Then I have created a second button to Store File that copies the file out of that temporary folder to the correct client folder and then deletes it from the temporary folder. That's working, but I'd like to figure out how to upload the file to the right folder in the first place, so my clients don't have to click a second button. I tried using the AfterUpload event on the File Upload window to place the very same code I'm using on that second Store File button, but it doesn't find the file in the temporary folder.

    Any ideas?

    YAY for Selwyn... I posed the question in this thread to Selwyn and he has now made it so that a session variable for the upload path CAN be used in the Upload Folder field. It's in his latest patch files.

      What syntax are you using. I can't get it to work.

        Pete, See attached screenshot. Make sure you have Selwyn's latest patch. I don't think it's in the latest full version update.

        Then for Live Preview to work while I'm developing, I always have to make sure I've triggered the code that fills the session variable with the appropriate folder path value.

        NOTE! Do NOT put a \ at the end of that path value contained in the session variable. Alpha is going to put that \ in for you when it runs. I made that mistake at first.

          Re: Use session variable for UploadFolder in File Upload feature

          Additional note - To do File Download, I am using an Ajax callback as the Type on the File Download window. This is so I can move the file from the session variable path to the user's session folder before download. Selwyn said he has made it possible to use a session variable on the File Download window, but so far I can't get it to work. Here's the code I'm currently using:

          Code:
          function PreviewDownload as c (e as p)
          'debug(1)
          dim filetocopy as c
          filetocopy = e.session.__protected__fileuploadpath+"\\"+e._currentRowDataNew.DocFileName

          dim filetocreate as c
          filetocreate = session.session_folder+"\\"+e._currentRowDataNew.DocFileName

          file.copy(filetocopy,filetocreate)

          'Set what type of callback and where to find file to download.
          e.ajaxCallBackType = "FileDownload"
          e.fileToDownload = e._currentRowDataNew.DocFileName
          e.Folder = session.session_folder
          e.Action = "Display Message" 'action to take if the file to download is not found
          e.Message = "The file was not found." 'The message to display to the user if the file to download is not found and e.Action is set to 'Display Message'

          end function

            Re: Use session variable for UploadFolder in File Upload feature

            I made one more request to Selwyn - that I can use the session variable that has the folder path as the Image Path for an Image field that has a Display Format of <Image File Reference Field>. He just now sent me a message this this is done and that I need to get latest aex patch. UPDATE: I have tested it and it is working beautifully! I owe a big THANK YOU to Selwyn!

            Below is info received from Selwyn in the past. These links are to his latest patches. (BTW, if you have Windows 7, you will need to save the .zip files into a different folder, then unzip them, and copy the files to the A5V10 program folder. Win 7 program file folder doesn't let you unzip into it.)

            In this case, I think we only need the first one below.

            This file contains a pre-release of the updates to the aex file that will be in the next update.
            Exit from Alpha Five and unzip this file into your A5V10 program folder.
            You must also unzip it into the A5V10 Server folder if you are running the stand-alone App Server.

            This file contains an update to the exe and dll files. Exit Alpha Five and unzip into your program folder.
            You must also unzip it into the A5V10 Server folder if you are running the stand-alone App Server.
            You can also unzip these files into your A5V10 Runtime folder.

              Thanks Carol - I did see that in the latest official patch - it's a great Feature.

                Bringing up anold thread...

                I am quite new o this, but instead of using a session variable I would like to use a field in the grid (for example projectID).

                  Thinking about this again... would it be possible to grab a row field and set it to a variable before the download begins? I am totally new to this but something like this:

                  session.folder = e.projectnumber (value of field "projectnumber")

                  and later upload/download to/from something like:
                  media\session.folder

                  Thanks for any help on this!!!

                  Regards
