Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Copies of Set files on the desktop?

For the past month or so on my development machine, 2 or 3 copies of set files have been mysteriously showing up on my Xp desktop (see examples below). Seems like someone had this problem before but if so I have not been able to find the thread. I have not yet been able to determine when it happens (e.g., after a compact, etc.).

Anyone have any idea how this happens? These are not the only set files in the databases they belong to. Worse yet, the 2 re.set/sem files are in the folder with the other one but they are not part of the database, nor do they even link and tables. I have no idea where they came from. The User_IP.Sem on the other hand is a merely a copy of a live file in the database I have been working on.

I haven't seen this in a long time but last time I did it was because I was starting A5 from an icon and the Start In folder was left blank. I always point my Start In folder to my application (not A5 exe) folder.

Yes, these days one needs to start the app manually, using the File, Open database menu in the control panel, or using a shortcut that was created by the alpha shortcut tool.

Are they a hang over from a Set Duplication process?

          No.

And, all my shortcuts were created either by A5 install or for DB's using the A5 shortcut tool, and the ones for a Db have the app folder for the Start In folder.

This morning I tried all kinds of things to try to reproduce the problem with no luck. I guess I am just going to have to pay attention to the desktop for a while to see if I can get a clue as to what is triggering the file copy.

Once while testing I remember my application ended with a (memory) error and was not responding any longer.
I got a debugscreen and the program exited abruptly.

I suppose at that moment the files were written (as usual) but with a corrupt memory they where written elsewhere.
In your case on the desktop. [joke]Must be a real desktop application![/joke]

Can you remember what happend with A5 on your computer at the date and time of these files?

            My 2 cents

No, except that nothing out of the ordinary happened, like a crash. This happened again last week and again I have no idea why. The app works perfectly both before and after I delete the set files from the desktop (i.e. they are at most just duplicates and it's always just set files--.set and .sem). Also, it's happening in more than just one database.

Ray, in your database do you have tables in more than one folder or subfolder?

Next question: if you examine (view) the table/sets list in detail mode do you find that all the sets are in the same folder as the database dictionaries themselves?

Had the same thing happen a few months ago. Exactly the same and went on for a while. Not sure why it stopped and not sure how it happened, but it went away. Though I may have run an update.

Mine was happening with the developement I believe.

To answer one query above. None of my files were out of the same folder. Each app is totally contained within a folder.

Tom, since this started happening I have worked on only 3 databases, 2 of which have sets and both of those have had the .set and .sem files show up on the desktop a number of times. In one of them all the files are in one folder and this one has had the files show up the most # of times on the desktop. In the other DB one of the tables is "foreign", i.e., in a folder one level up and this foreign table is the primary table in the set which is in the main folder. Yes, this is unusual, but there is method to the madness and it has been working perfectly. Besides, it is the other DB that has had its files show on the desktop the most often.

In both cases I do occasionally have need to switch back to V9 and then back to V10 but in my testing this does not seem to be what is causing the problem.

As I said, so far I have not been able to catch the files showing up when they first show up, so I am not sure what I might have been doing that would cause the problem. I am even wondering if maybe they only show up on a reboot of Windows XP.

                      Raymond,

Please let us know if you get this one figured out. It was a while back but I remember being a little upset about it.

                      Thanks.
