Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need suggestions for cascading dropdown

I am working on a web based interface for my volunteer fire department so that the officers can start an incident report entry with a smart phone or tablet while still at the location of the incident.

So far it is coming along fine. The Alpha Five application connects to a MySQL database back at the firehouse and entries are input in real time.

My problem is coming up with a method for a cascading selection that is based on a single table.
The table is set up with 3 fields, field 1 is the description, field 2 is the code and field 3 is the level.

When the user pulls down the drop down he chooses a selection from level 1, this then presents him with choices from level 2 items and he then makes a final choice from the level 3 items. The code from the level 3 item gets stored in the record.

See the attached images for a better explanation of what I am referring to.

I have watched the videos and searched for posts related to cascading lookups but haven't yet found a way to do what I need. Can anybody point me in the right direction here?

I wonder if the add-on Tree Control Navigator would be useful here. Going to have a look.

Re: Need suggestions for cascading dropdown

I think I might be making progress using the tree control genie from an A5w page. I have been able to set up the tree hierarchy and get the first level but the second level displays all of the choices. How can I filter the second level based on what is chosen in the first level? I am using the complex query choice so I should have any sql selection criteria available to me. I am not real well versed in this so any help is appreciated.

Filtering is part of the genie. The attached is what I'm getting. Can't quite get the code and desc for all levels... just the last level. Is this the type of thing you need?

Yes, that's what I'm looking for but I don't have the tree control navigator add in. How are you doing the filtering? Maybe I can adapt it to the HTML genie.

            Doug,

This was done with the A5W Tree Genie. I'm embarassed to say I'd completely forgotten about it until you mentioned it.

However, have a look at the Tree-Control add-on... a bit easier to work with for changing stuff and plays nicely with Grids.

The A5W Genie adds the Filters automatically. See attached Tree Genie image. Click the Convert button in the Data dialog... then the next form will let you select a level and the filter will display.

OK, so how did you do it with the Tree Genie?

Re: Need suggestions for cascading dropdown

David, I am still not getting anywhere. It looks like you set up your test table differently than mine. I don't have an separate column for each level code, is that how you structured your tbllevels table? I only have 3 columns, CODE, DESCR, LEVELSQL. See the attachment in my original post. I can't figure out how to do this without a change in the table structure and that's not an option. I might be able to create a view to set it up but haven't been able to figure that out yet either.

Forgive my thick head and I appreciate your help but I'm not quite there yet and I have to figure this out somehow. If you are using my table structure can you explain a bit more in detail how you are doing this? What you have is what I need. I have several lookups that will need to be set up this way.

Got it... sorry... wasn't thinking about the table structure. I think this can be done with some specific filtering on the levels... having a look.

Re: Need suggestions for cascading dropdown

Got this working using the Add-in, adjusting the filter as needed. The concept should be the same for the A5W Genie. See attached.

Here are the filters I used.

                        First Level: Len(alltrim(code))=1

                        Second Level: Len(alltrim(code))=2 .and. Left(alltrim(:level1),1)=Left(alltrim(code),1)

                        Third Level: Len(alltrim(code))=3 .and. Left(alltrim(:level2), 2)= left(alltrim(code),2)

It's a little "hard coded" to test for the length of the strings, but, what the hey. The 2nd part of the filter tests the beginning of the prior level code to the current level choices.

                        The Expression can also read:

                        alltrim(code) + " : " + alltrim(desc)

to get the description in there.

Re: Need suggestions for cascading dropdown

Finally got it. I have been trying to get it to work with a MySQL connection and was not successful with that because the expressions are not valid. Created a passive link table and applied it against that and it works. The tables should not change often so I think it will be acceptable that way.

                          Thanks much David.
