Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    session variable trap

    In some of my child grids I set the initial value of a field to a session variable in the OnIntitalValueCalculate event.

    If I try to run the grid without the parent I get an error indicating that the session variable cannot be found which is normal.

    My question is. Does anyone know of a way to trap this error? Or alternately a better way to set the initial values of child grid fields.

    Code:
    if eval_valid("session.variable_name") then
      'Do your code
    end if
    Make sure you put quotes around the variable name.

      THANK YOU. I did try that without the quotes.

        If you just need to get a value from the parent grid, you can use this code in OnIntitalValueCalculate* client event:

        po = {grid.Object}.getParentObject();
        var rowNum = po._selectedRow;
        var data = po.getValue('G','MYFIELD',rowNum);
        {grid.Object}.setValue('D','MYFIELD', data);

        In this case it is setting the child field MYFIELD to the parent's default value of a field with the same name (which the user can override in the child grid).

        Note, you'll need to, of course, make sure the field is present in the grid of the parent (even if it is hidden).

        *Correction: the OnIntitalValueCalculate is a server-side function and in coded in Xbasic. However, if you have a Detail View, you can put this Javascript in CanDetailViewRecord.

          Vaughn,

          Can your code be used to set a session variable?

          I need to get a value from the parent grid and pull it in to a grandchild grid. For example, from the parent grid, user clicks a button, which goes to a child grid; then, from that child grid, clicks another button and goes to another grid.

            Re: session variable trap

            The only way in Javascript (i.e. in the client) to set a session variable is to do an Ajax callback. The problem, of course, with this is that the call back happens in parallel with what is going on in your Javascript code. There are some tricks we have worked out to do this but it is more convenient if you can avoid doing Ajax callbacks.

            With what you are doing, depending on where you need the value in your grandchild grid, you could use a Javascript global variable. E.g.

            In your parent grid, you could do something like this in the Javascript for the button:

            var rowNum = {grid.object}._selectedRow;
            var data = {grid.object}.getValue('G','MYFIELD',rowNum);
            gridvar_myvalue = data;

            This last statement creates a global Javascript variable named gridvar_myvalue. It is global if you don't put "var" in front of it and if it is defined outside a function. It can be named whatever you want, I preceded "myvalue" with "gridvar_" to avoid possible name collisions with other Javascript global vars.

            In your grandchild grid, you can refer to this global variable as window.gridvar_myvalue, e.g.

            alert('Myvalue=' + window.gridvar_myvalue);

            Since it is global, it can be referenced this way in any grid opened in the same session (after the variable is defined, of course).

              Another idea: Although I haven't tested it, you should be able to reference a grand parent's data like this:

              po = {grid.Object}.getParentObject();
              gpo = po.getParentObject();
              var rowNum = gpo._selectedRow;
              var data = gpo.getValue('G','MYFIELD',rowNum);

                Vaughn,

                Thank you so much!!!!!!!

                This gives a much better understanding, and I think I can get this to work!

                  I will try that as well.

                  But, now that I can define the variable as global, how do I populate the grandchild grid field. In other words, I waant to stuff the global java script variable called idnumber in to a field on the grandchild grid called idnumber to enter a new record?

                    Re: session variable trap

                    Something like this should work (in OnIntitalValueCalculate client event):

                    {grid.Object}.setValue('D','IDNUMBER', window.gridvar_idnumber);

                      Is there such an event on client side?

                      I only see it on the server side.

                      ??

                            What if I am not using the detail view - in this case, I am using the grid as a form to enter a new record.

                            I tried OnGridRender and OnRowSelect but no luck ,,,
