Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Save PDF Report Using Arguments

    I am trying to use a button to save a PDF report with arguments. I am successful in saving the report without the arguments, but am too newbie to get it to work with arguments. I have been studying this Alpha help: http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp..._.SAVEAS().htm

    The example in that article for using arguments is:
    Code:
    This script saves copy of the Invoice report with an argument.
    You can add as many arguments to the arguments collection as you want.

    	DIM myargs as SQL::arguments
    	myargs.add("whatcity","London")
             report.saveas("report1", "", "", .f., .f., myargs)
    The code I'm trying to run is below. It works fine if I leave out the arguments part. Do I need to open an sql connection or something? If anyone can spot my problem, can you let me know. I'm being pretty clutsy about using arguments. Thanks!
    Code:
    function SavePOReportNoItems as c (e as p)
    dim reportLayoutName as c
    reportLayoutName = "PurchaseOrderWithoutIems@web_chs_alpha.alb"

    dim reportFileName as c
    reportFileName = "PO_"+e._currentRowDataNew.PO_NUM+".pdf"

    dim reportSavePath as c
    reportSavePath = "C:\TestSaveReports"+"\\"+reportFileName

    DIM args as SQL::arguments
    args.add("whatponum",e._currentRowDataNew.PO_NUM)
    args.add("whatpocode",e._currentRowDataNew.PO_CODE)

    report.saveas(reportLayoutName, "PDF", "" , "" , reportSavePath,.F.,,args)

    'The line below works with the args removed.
    'report.saveas(reportLayoutName, "PDF", "" , "" , reportSavePath,.F.)

    SavePOReportNoItems = "alert('The report has been saved.');"

    end function

    Re: Save PDF Report Using Arguments

    Further clarification: I know how to open the report in Acrobat and just save it, but I will be using a session variable for the path that would save the report on the server for the user to access later. I have already done that successfully.

      The syntax shown at the top disagrees with the example you quote. I count the arguments as the 8th paramater. As I understand things you cannot omit optional parameters if you specify a later parameter.

      I would try

      report.saveas(reportLayoutName, "PDF", "" , "" , reportSavePath,.F.,.F.,args)
      There can be only one.

        Re: Save PDF Report Using Arguments

        Thanks so much, Stan, that DID get rid of the error that it couldn't compile the function. Thank you. BUT....

        It is not recognizing the arguments. ie, the report has all records and not just the one for the appropriate PO_NUM and PO_CODE.

        BTW, I am manually deleting the report before I save it again, so I am not looking at a previous report, which I can verify by looking at time created. Once I accomplish the args thing, I will also include a time stamp in the report name so it will always be unique.

          Re: Save PDF Report Using Arguments

          Should I be using the parameter for filter instead of arguments? When the report is just opened using button OnClick using the action to open a report, I have the following SQL filter in the Layout Print Definition, and the report opens for the PO_NUM and PO_CODE in the current record.

          SQL Filter for opening report:
          PO_NUM = '{PO_NUM}' AND PO_CODE = '{PO_CODE}'

          I looked at the Xbasic being generated by the above and can see this:
          Code:
          ro.sqlFilter = 'PO_NUM = \''+{grid.object}._getValue('G','PO_NUM',rowNum)+'\' AND PO_CODE = \''+{grid.object}._getValue('G','PO_CODE',rowNum)+'\'';
          I don't know how to translate that as the filter parameter for the report.saveas....

            Re: Save PDF Report Using Arguments

            I'm just using one argument per report, so I can't promise it recognizes multiple in your scenario, but I've used this code with adaptations in several places in our application.

            Code:
            :Report.SaveAs("ERContactXargs@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\support_coordination.alb","PDF","","",filenamefolder+filename,.F.,null_value(),args)
            I'm also assuming you've written the report SQL definition with those arguments as well?

              Re: Save PDF Report Using Arguments

              STILL trying to get arguments to be recognized in the report.saveas code. (The whatponum and whatpocode arguments ARE defined in the sql for the report itself. When just opening the report, they perform as expected. Here is screenshot of the window for opening the report: http://screencast.com/t/sfQpqkvbJD)

              This code does save the report but does not recognize the arguments, so all records are on report.
              Code:
              DIM args as SQL::arguments
              args.add("whatponum",vPONum)
              args.add("whatpocode",vPOCode)

              :report.saveas(reportLayoutName, "PDF", "" , "" , reportSavePath,.F.,.F.,args)
              I have tried commenting out the 2nd argument so there is only 1 argument and that doesn't work either.

              When I open the report, there is a SQL filter AND the arguments, so I started wondering if I needed to include the filter in the report.saveas code. So I tried the following, and, of course, received error that the filter expression was not valid.

              Code:
              DIM args as SQL::arguments
              args.add("whatponum",vPONum)
              args.add("whatpocode",vPOCode)

              dim sqlFilter as c
              sqlFilter = "PO_NUM = :whatponum AND PO_CODE = :whatpocode"

              :report.saveas(reportLayoutName, "PDF", sqlFilter , "",reportSavePath,.F.,.F.,args)
              BTW, I put the : in front of the report.saveas code cuz I see that in examples above. Why am I putting that there?

                    Re: Save PDF Report Using Arguments

                    RESOLUTION! (Resorted to Selwyn again and he did say that the help example wasn't really complete about object.saveas. I think he meant that example doesn't show right number of parameters)

                    I needed to use the last parameter for options in the report.saveas statement. Here is the resulting successful code for anyone who ends up at this thread cuz they are needing this kind of info:

                    Code:
                    function SavePOReportNoItems as c (e as p)

                    dim vDateTime as c
                    vDateTime = time("yyyyMMdd_hms") 'year month day _ hour min second (used Ctrl down key in function to get the help)

                    dim reportLayoutName as c
                    reportLayoutName = "PurchaseOrderWithoutIems@web_chs_alpha.alb"

                    dim vPONum as c
                    vPONum = e._currentRowDataNew.PO_NUM

                    dim vPOCode as c
                    vPOCode = e._currentRowDataNew.PO_CODE

                    dim reportFileName as c
                    reportFileName = "PO_"+vPONum+"_"+vDateTime+".pdf"

                    dim reportSavePath as c
                    reportSavePath = e.session.__protected__xxxxxx+"\\"+reportFileName

                    DIM args as SQL::arguments
                    args.add("whatponum",vPONum)
                    args.add("whatpocode",vPOCode)

                    dim options as p
                    options.filter = "PO_NUM = :whatponum and PO_CODE = :whatpocode"

                    report.saveas(reportLayoutName, "PDF", "" , "" , reportSavePath,.F.,.F.,args,options)

                    SavePOReportNoItems = "alert('The report has been saved.');"
