Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Yet another question

I have a small toolbar that I have on top of the screen. The rest of the block from the right end of the toolbar to the left of the screen is almost the color of this message box. Is there a way to change the color of the entire block across the top of the screen?

      Tom,

Thank you, works great. Just one thing, were do I set the color. My screen is a custom dark blue and now the toolbar does cover the entire top, it is a tan color.

      Thanks

Open you toolbar in design mode. Click on the toolbar appearance tab. The second feature down is Color and font (see thumbnail). Put the color in the box.

Sort of related to this. How can I change the fill setting for the toolbars background - mine are all gradient horiz middle and I need solid? There's no setting for this in the toolbar editor.

              Tollbar settings

              Nick

I believe that the background style of the tool bar is going to be directly related to the Windows setting in the windows properties - which is all gradient style in windows classic and windows xp - in win 7 if my memory serves me, it is the transparent look (but I may be wrong - I haven't looked at a win7 machines since yesterday:)

So to answer your question, since alpha takes the system style and then adds the color, the toolbar will be whatever is in the windows appearances as far as style

              Just my belief.

Maybe someone else with have something else to say on the this matter since this post will bump it to the top

                Re: Yet another question

Thanks, Tom - that makes sense although it was not what I wanted to hear. I had another question about toolbars (button spacing and flyover) that I posted in the v9 forum http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=92961 Any ideas??

                  Re: Yet another question

OK, so the flyover question seems to be the same as the fill, it takes the windows default. I will have to do some further experiments to check finally. But what about the background size issue for buttons on the toolbar, and the button spacing??

                    Nick

You change the font setting for the button text in the toolbar appearance tab of the toolbar in design mode.

As as spacing, you could use the XD free form xdialog. You add that before your button and after your button. You code the xddialog free form in the toolbar by adding it to the toolbar and then clicking on the button on the genie "Define Xdialog Code". When the script editor comes up you type

                    Code:
                    {text=5,1junktext}
That simply gives you 5 spaces (or thereabout) and assgns a blank value to junktext- make sure you don't already have a variable called junktext) This was courtesty of Selwyn many years ago.

I use it all the time to give more separation between buttons on the toolbar and the fill out the end of the toolbar to the end of the form (or further).

                    Hope this helps

edit. The Text=5,1junktext is just an xdialog. You can make text=1000 or whatever and alpha will create spacing a long way off the form. The 1junktext is just saying that the line heigh is 1, you could put 2 or 3 or 5 etc, but until you get to around 5 the increase is almost non existent. I don't use that and have not tinkered with the line height so I can't give you a number. I do know 5 makes the height of the button larger.

                      Re: Yet another question

                      Thanks for the help.
I can change the font size no problem (although I am not doing that because I am using Photoshop images for all the buttons.
It is a vertical toolbar and my problems are (1) I can't get a button style that has no background, whatever I do I always get space around the button. The a5_toolbar_def_load help says "Modern Style buttons have a colored background and border when they have focus (this style is consistent with Windows XP). If you select the Modern toolbar style, you can select different button background colors and border styles." but selecting the Modern style does not seem to give me those options.
And (2) I want to stack all my vertical buttons together with no spaces between and I can't find a way of doing this.

And I do use selwyn's idea to fill out to the end of the toolbar, that works fine.
