Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Trigger the OnClick event of a button from Xbasic

    Is it possible to write some Xbasic code that triggers a button's OnClick event? I'd like to take advantage of the wonderful wizard provided for opening a grid component in a pop up window that I can get at via a button event. However, I need to run some Xbasic code via an Ajax callback before opening the window. I'm trying to avoid making the user click two buttons to accomplish this... AND I'm trying to avoid having to write the code myself for opening that grid component in a pop up window. Would like to hide the 2nd button so user doesn't see it, but would like to trigger its OnClick code.

    In MS Access (Visual Basic), I just simply type: Call Button2_onClick()

    I have a feeling it's not that easy here.

    Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Re: Trigger the OnClick event of a button from Xbasic

    Here's a very general idea of what I've done in similar situations, when I've wanted to use some Action Javascript genie functionality after an ajax callback.

    -create your button for your ajax callback and code as appropriate.

    -create a generic button, and hide it. Set the javascript onclick event to do whatever it is I wanted to do using the action javascript genie.

    -once everything in the event is set as I want it, change from Action Javascript to Text mode.

    -copy the text in the Javascript Attribute tab in text mode, and paste it in the javascript expression returned by your ajax callback. You may need to do some adjustments if the expression relies on a grid row number, etc.

    Not saying this is the easiest or the correct way to do things, but it has gotten me in the right direction.

      Carol,

      You need to use a little JavaSvript. Get the button's id - which you can get from a system event. Do it something like this:

      Code:
      Function xbAjaxCallback as C (e as p)
      'xbasic code here
      xbAjaxCallback = "ele = $('{grid.componentName}.D.V.R1._UNBOUND_BUTTON_1'); ele.click();"
      End Function

        Jeff, I had the same thought about copying the text code, but then got worried about adding complexity when needing to make changes to that code for some reason.

        Peter, your solution looks wonderful. I just tried it but received script error that 'object doesn't support this property or method' .

        Here is code I used:
        Code:
        myXbasicfunctionname = "ele = $('{grid.componentName}.D.V.R1._UNBOUND_BUTTON_5'); ele.click();"
        The grid is a form view grid with only one row. Does that make any difference?

          Make sure to get the id from that grid. It should work. The button must be "visible", but you can use a show/hide expression of 1=2.

            Well, I'm too ignorant to know what you mean about getting the grid id. Apologies. I made button 5 visible and used Show/Hide of 1=2 (great idea!) but still get same script error.

              Jeff - I see what you're talking about. I was all off on trying to copy the entire code and not just the short line that shows in text mode for the button. Peter, does this code from the text mode for the button give a clue as to how I'm supposed to adapt to the code you posted?
              Code:
              {grid.componentName}_G__UNBOUND_BUTTON_5_1({grid.rownumber},'{grid.rowId}',this);

                Carol,

                See the attached image and sample grid...

                  Re: Trigger the OnClick event of a button from Xbasic

                  Thanks, Peter. Below is the code that worked. It was taken from Peter's example above. I get really confused about referring to row numbers, and which script is used where. ie, if you look at the Insert Object Name or ID window in the Javascrtipt system events, you can choose between using grid.rownumber placeholders OR using javascript for row number. How do you know which one to use? Or, do you just try both and hope one of them works?

                  Also, how do you know to use the ele and ele.click stuff? That's not anywhere in the Text mode javascript for the button.

                  I recognize how much Alpha IS doing for me (an untrained javascript, html, and xbasic person), but there is NO way you "don't have to write any programming code" as they advertise. Thank GOODNESS for this message board. I hope some of my pursuits here are helping others in same boat.

                  Code:
                  myfunctionname = "ele = $('{grid.componentName}.V.R{grid.rowNumber}._UNBOUND_BUTTON_5');ele.click();"

                    ele (for 'element') is just a JS variable. You could call it vButton if you like.

                    That first line should read:
                    Code:
                    var ele = ...
                    otherwise you create a global JS variable which you don't need in this case, since the script is local.

                    Regarding the e object, see attached image (which doesn't help answer your question all that much)...
