Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Update Alpha Four from Alpha Five Application

    Any breaking caveats to updating a live and in use alpha 4 table from Alpha 5?

    Re: Update Alpha Four from Alpha Five Application

    It might matter how you do the updating. If you use methods such as tbl.change_begin() I am fairly sure there won't be any problems. I know in the past I have used such methods to find and update records in a live ACT Contact Manager DBF file with A5 table data--encountered no problems at all (daily updates for many years until just recently). So I would guess there would be no problems with an A4 DBF file.

      Re: Update Alpha Four from Alpha Five Application

      Thanks for the reply.

      I'm going to be doing pretty simple updates and adding records.

      example code snip for adding a record:

      Code:
      a4tablename = "a4\invtry"
      dim a4tbl as P
      a4tbl = table.open(a4tablename,FILE_RW_SHARED);
      a4tbl.index_primary_put()

      	a4tbl.enter_begin()

      	a4tbl.PART_NO = a5tbl.PART_NO
      	a4tbl.RECORD_NO = a5tbl.RECORD_NO
      	a4tbl.CHANGED = a5tbl.CHANGED

      	a4tbl.enter_end()
      I'm a major newbie here, so I'm not confident on what to expect from a4 when it reads data added or changed by a5.

      Anything special needs to be done with "opening" , "flushing" or "committing" the changes?

        Re: Update Alpha Four from Alpha Five Application

        I doubt that you will run into any problems, though my experience with the ACT table was updating only, not creating a new record (with ACT creating a new record would mess things up with ACT specific fields, but I doubt that would be true with an A4 table).

        Can you test when no one else is using the A4 table (after backing it up)?

          Raymond,

          I think you're on track with the adding records. If you add a record to the a4 table via a5, a4 isn't going to know about it. Any a4 indexes will not be updated. One would have th reindex the a4 table in a4.
          There can be only one.

              indexing the updated a4:
              is there any way to execute the index from a5?
              for example, a shell execute of some sort?

              memo fields:
              ok, will do ... i'm hoping they will not be an issue.
              no worries with them when updating non memo style fields though .. right?

                Re: Update Alpha Four from Alpha Five Application

                memo fields in a5 are a different file extension than a4

                They are not likely to work with each other.

                Reindexing of a4 will have to be done in a4
                a4 uses a idx extensin and a5 uses cdx and ddx
                (I think)
