Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    IE6 Formatting

    First of all, thanks to everyone for their great posts and expert advice. I've been lurking on this board for the past 6 weeks getting the answers I need and not having to post any questions.

    This is more a rant than a request for advice.

    I gave a demo yesterday to a very large, west coast based Financial Services company. The app we built assists technology departments with their workforce planning.

    The app had been tested with IE7+, chrome, firefox, opera, etc., and looked and behaved great. What we didn't anticipate was that the client still had IE6 deployed. Did I mention that this was a very large Financial Services company?

    In any case, functionality seemed OK except for modal pop-up windows, but most (I'd say all, but we didn't go through them all our screens at the time) of the parent/child grid screens had some pretty ugly formatting.

    I'm going to try some of the header recommendations to fix the formatting and will report back here if they work.

    I suppose this post is also a warning that a number of corporate standard desktop images still deploy IE6.

    Meeting with a large venture capital bank in the Sili Valley today and keeping my fingers crossed...

    Bill:
    Not sure why would anyone be stuck in IE6 !! when it doesn't cost a penny to upgrade at least to IE8.
    Lots happened between IE6 and now IE9, most notably HTML5 and HTML6 coming onboard soon if not already there.
    Perhaps some of the tags in the grid utilize HTML5 and I can't see you regressing to accommodated those guys! I can't see alpha regressing either. I'd give them a primer on IE8. It's been long out of beta and it's fairly safe and there is no earthly reason to use IE6. None.

      Re: IE6 Formatting

      As a developer - I no longer support IE6.
      It is outdated and horrible.

      Suggest they should go back to chiseling their data into rock - as IE6 is THAT far away from IE7 and 8.

      As developers, I think there comes a time when we have to say no.
      IE6 is outdated, has many security flaws, and uses the wrong box model.

      Good luck trying to support it.

      if you INSIST, take a look at conditional style sheets.
      Itll be something along the lines of

      <!--if [IE6]-->
      <link href="styles/ie6.css" rel="Stylesheet" type="text/css"/> //this is only processed by ie6 browsers, so you can add whatever styles you need to override for ie6 to this css
      <!--endif--->

      http://css-tricks.com/how-to-create-...ly-stylesheet/ - there you go.

      Gluck!

        Re: IE6 Formatting

        "Dealing with IE 6 and below is always an extra-special challenge. These days people are dropping support for it right and left, including major businesses, major web apps, and even governments. There is a better solution than just letting the site go to hell, and that is to server IE 6 and below a special stripped-down stylesheet, and then serve IE 7 and above (and all other browsers) the regular CSS. This is been coined the universal IE 6 CSS." - From the link above

        <!--[if lte IE 6]>
        <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen, projection" href="http://universal-ie6-css.googlecode.com/files/ie6.0.3.css" />
        <![endif]-->

        Seems like Google COde has a universal ie6 stylesheet.
        This probably fixes many IE6 issues.

        Above the lte IE6 means - process this code if the browser is less than or equal to IE6.

        Just the fact that Microsoft had to add this little processor into their browser should show how bad their box model was :)
