Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form bound to wrong table

A strange one. Was testing out a new piece of code - using a copy function to move records from one table (based on current filter) to another. System locked up (I assume I had a bug in my code). Removed faulty code. System would now run but not correctly. Discovered that one of my forms that had been bound to the first table was now bound to the second (if I look in form properties under filter/order, the "table" setting has been changed).
How was this possible, even with a program bug, and how can I change it back (other than rebuilding the form to be tied to the correct table)?

Right click on form name in control panel, choose Copy To...

What do you see when you look at the control panel - form tab - in detail view - so you can see what table the form is bound to?

Here is an image of a form based on a set called invoice where the first table in the set is invoice_header.

(and then do what Stan said..)

Re: Form bound to wrong table

Update: what has happened is that the system has created a second copy tied to the second table of every form that was tied to the first table. Even stranger.

That would happen if the first table was duplicated with the appropriate options.

Yes, that pointed me in the right direction. The option was incorrectly set to copy the data dictionary across. That would cause all the layouts to be duplicated. But I wonder why all the links from scripts etc to the layouts for the original file had been replaced by links to the copies of the layout? I would have expected those to be unchanged.
Still, at least I can see how to clean it up.

OK, final post I think on this. When the data dictionary gets copied over, it creates a second copy of the form with the same name. When the form name is used to open the form, Alpha 5 does not know which one to use. If I use the code editor to look at a script, the action script statements have "lost" the form name. If I look at the xbasic, the form name is there but I guess since there are two forms with the same name, it does not work.

Confusion abounds when object names are not unique...

Sounds like you have an operation that needs to have it's options adjusted and you'll have to manually clean up the problems.

Not sure how to advise you more.... Your mileage may vary depending on what you want to actually happen...

I deleted the new table and all the duplicate forms went with it, and now all the form references are unique.

Nick, when you end up with two or more forms with the same name, Alpha will prompt you for the exact location of the object etc that you want to use.
Rather than selecting an object from the list, you will get something like
                    "C:/Alpha_Test_Bed/Siqlops/this_form"
                    as opposed to
                    "this_form".

Make sure you delete the right ones as well. Experience mumbling away here!

Yes, I noticed that. As I said, the duplicate forms disppeared when I deleted the new table, presumable because the data dictionary (which I had copied in error) disappeared also.
It made we wonder why you would ever want to copy the data dictionary at all, but I guess that situation is one I have not come across yet.

The only reason I do it is when I'm testing changes to tables.
It gets difficult with 10 forms linked to a table as they all need renaming to identify the different data sources.
Good job we get paid to do this!
