Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 Title

Is there a way to set the title of an app using something like the autoexec instead of creating a shortcut using the include?

Again thanks Stan - I can't find any help either. Shame as it really can enhance making the short cut easier in installing packages.

If that's what you're after I would modify the databasename.startup file. It is plain text with the .startup extension listing the command line options chosen.

              Mark,

The other side is to create a start up with an exe file from any exe generator that has the command lines included. There are other ways as well.

              Check this: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=67153

Hope some of the information helps.

                Re: A5 Title

I suppose my reasoning was to ensure the look and feel of an application could be managed without the need for shortcuts. I note the advice, but this is a simple use of the autexec and would work if you are opening a db from the alpha menu.

It removes the need to create it as part of the install package and would improve end user look and feel. I note that if you do not get shortcuts correct or the end user changes the desktop and removes the short cuts etc (as they do) at least the program, when they get it open, would still have the title set.

In fact I would think that this would be a godd thing to include in the database properties setting.

                  Re: A5 Title

We use the "appname".startup method that Stan described.

this includes our Icon, Agency Name, and a splash screen instead of the "Alpha Five" Splash.

                  Code:
                  -TITLE="Social Services"
                  -SPLASH="G:\BCBSS\seal.bmp"
                  -MAXIMIZE
                  -ICON="G:\BERGEN2.ICO"
Our application is named "socsvcs.adb" and the startup file is

                  "socsvcs.startup"

Tom, this is something i would like to use, but i am new, so can you break it down to my level, the goo-goo-ga-ga level is what i probably need.

Do i put this in the autoexec?

                      J.R.

In the Alpha Help, look up "Starting Alpha Five With Command Line Options".

It lists all the command line options to start up Alpha 5. Gives you some examples also.

                          J.R.

WHat I have listed in the code section is the contents of a text file that I named "socsvcs.startup". That file is in the same folder as my database, "socsvcs.adb" When the database starts up, the software looks for a <database>.startup file and uses it. The commands in the .startup file are the same as those you would string out on a command line, just more readable.

Attached is an example of the folder content that I have for a different application.

                            Re: A5 Title

OK - I can see that I have started everyone going down the wrong track for my solution.

I do not want to use a shortcut that has a command line with reference to the startup file. I understand how that works.

I want to emulate the startup using the autoexec when the database is open. If you see above we can set the title but cannot set the icon. By default the icon is the A5 logo. I want to know if I can change that in the same way I set the title.

Maybe this solutions is in another place. Where does runtime store the icon. Does anyone know. Maybe I can replace it with the icon I want.

I want to do this process as it will remove any user changes to shortcuts that are used which ends up using the Alpha logo, Alpha Title and Icon and totally changing the look or feel

                              Mark,

                              Attached is an example.
I have placed the icon in the runtime folder and assigned it to alphafive.exe.

You can also copy the alphafive.exe to yourname.exe and assig your icon to yourname.exe.

                              Hope this helps.
