Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Are we going to lose out with V11?

I was contacted recently, as I am sure a lot of you were, regarding the V11 and the planned "Subscription" route if I wanted to upgrade when it is released.

My question was "What's the drop dead figure for a V11 and Unlimited Desktop Runtime". The answer was not what I expected. "Subscription Only $1000".

I'm wondering if the desktop market is seen to be falling by Alpha, and that the WAS market is in it's ascendency to justify the price.

In the past it has been relatively easy to afford the upgrades, and I have V10 purely for evaluation purposes. At $1000 a pop, it's not something I really want to consider at the moment.

    Any comments?

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

Right now, that's likely correct, as it is not officially for sale, and the subscription contains all the addons. When it comes out, it will most likely be priced the same as usual, without the addons.

The $1000 price is high. A5 software is not the only expense I have. Sitting on my hands, undecided.

Don't buy straight away. If history is correct Alpha will release some great specials on the program about 2 to 3 months after release. Specials get even better when there is a new version in the wind

1000 USD in our currency is a huge amount. I have just started getting up and running on my own with v10.5 desktop and am slowly building a client base. I will take Clunes' advice and wait a while before I take the plunge.

            Lloyd's of London

It is not easy to run a company profitably. Having run a company for 20 years I can tell you from experience, you don't clock out at 5.

IT is moving at astounding pace. Tablets and smart phones are like gasoline on a technology fire. Alpha's has kept us right in the thick of the cloud!

It takes top talent and vision to succeed in this market with a product like Alpha5. I say we support the Rabin's and their team the best we can as we can.

What we should be thinking about is how we can purchase a Lloyd's of London rider, God forbid should anything ever happen to the Rabin's brothers. Who could replace them???

            Regards,
            Bob

The upgrade/subscription makes since to me. While a $1000 is a $1000, when I look at what all I got it makes since. I have been a faithful Alpha 4/5 user for many years. I support the software and the company because I believe in both.

                    Me too!

Can't afford to though. Maybe later, things will change?

I use the desktop and runtime. I also am beginning to make use of the was, but it is not a have to. Also, most of the stuff I do on dexktop does not require many if any of the extras.

I agree with DaveM. It is too costly to upgrade from v10.5 to v11 for desk top users and the benefits do not seem worthwhile to me. I thought the upgrade was quoted at $1,499 not $1,000 but I may have misread the emails I was sent by Alpha.

                        Dave,

Sure your not missing something not moving to the cloud?
How many users can you install desktop software for, compared to the number who can hit your url?

I am sure there is money to be made on the desktop, but the potential of the cloud is exponential in comparison.

Are the desktop only developers just stuck in there ways? Are they settling in St. Louis instead of crossing the great divide?

                        Tks

Re: Are we going to lose out with V11?

                          Bob,

I am currently writing an app for a race car program that can be taken to the track on a laptop/desktop that helps a racer with setups. It keeps all their dynamic race data as well as their shop data.

There is rarely any method for them to do cloud from podunk raceway. They need a hands on now ability that alwasy works. When they read the three temps off four tires, they need it in the program now.

Yes they can sometimes get a card like from verizon for internet, but it costs about 100 to set up and 75 per month. Some places are pretty remote and the cards do not connect. My program will cost the about 100.00 a year. Big difference.

Is there still a place for desktop? YES

Could I write the program and use it on the web, sure. Then the racer has to have a place(with alpha) to park that app and pay 50 - 100 a month + the other figures mentioned above.

Verizon is the ONLY company that can connect at Citrus County Raceway when we tested last year. Verizon does NOT work well at Orlando speedway.

                          ???

Sounds interesting. You must have to know mechanics, electronics and software. I live near Atco speedway famous in these parts.
Also near the new raceway in Milleville NJ.

Would have to imagine that it will just be a matter of time before they will all be hot spots.

Just an idea that you might want to grow your product into. Sell it to the raceway, the racing team, and for that matter to the fan.

Avid fans might want to see how there car is runnin on there own hand held dash board while viewing the race.

If your going through all that engineering you mys well throw a couple cams on board.

How about a hybrid app, than everybody s happy!

Doubt Fans or tracks would care for it. Has almost nothing to do with the engine running.

Here is a pic of the app(1 page) that any racer will jump on.

I will have it set to sell before Saturday on disc and on the web by Tuesday with all security.
