Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to work with excel spreedsheets

    Im working on a project that needs to put some data from a grid into an excel spreadsheet. This must be a button on the grid that fires the excel spreedsheet ( new speeadsheet for every raw with a unique name.)

    Also if some cells is updated the updated values need to be updated back to the grid.

    Does anybody have experience with this? Is there any "out of thebox" component available?
    Any suggest?

    Is there any possibillities to use .net components? ala

    Im willing to pay some gurus for help on this issue.....

    Would the export to Excel Feature Pack work for you?

      How about if the user has a window pop open and gives them the ability to save the file to any name they want to give it?

      You can go to http://www.danblankdatabases.com/export_article.htm
      for an example.

        We use the 'Excel' feature pack and its been decent for simple exporting.

        If you use it - i highly recommend basing your grids on a view. Make that view EXACTLY what you want the spreadsheet to look like (field names will be exported as a header row in the excel spreadsheet)

          Genius, thank you.
          The View method appears that it will solve the problem.
          For one particular website I have Alpha 10.5 (using dbase files) on a Win7 and the export to excel feature pack.

          It will NOT allow me to export the excel column headings that I choose (I will have to investigate someone's comment as to whether or not I have particular .NET installed or no .NET installed; there was hint that it will work) PS. I have verified that the 10.5 is up to the current build.

          Anyway, I duplicated my Grid with Search Function, but instead built it on a View using the single dbf table (no need for a set; maybe later) and used the expressions to give the fields the names I want to export.
          I was uncertain that it would allow the long names and expecially the pound sign '#' in the name. Here are field name expressions for examples in case anyone is wondering what worked:

          Mailformseq (didn't need expression here; this field is used for ordering the records and is hidden from the result)(because THEY didn't want to see it)
          OWNER ID = Ownerid
          LASTNAME = Own1lname
          VEHICLE STICKER NUMBER = Buyno
          VEHICLE STICKER CLASS = Buyclass
          PAYMENT AMOUNT = Buyamt
          LICENSE PLATE # = Vehplate
          PAYMENT DATE = Buydate
          POSTMARK DATE = Postmark
          CONFIRMATION NUMBER = Confirm
          ALLOCATION CODE = Allocode
          VIN = Vehvin
          STREETNAME = Ncoaaddr
          CITY = Ncoacity
          STATE = Ncoastate
          ZIP = Ncoazip
          JDE NUMBER = Jdenum

          Your post was in 2011, but still useful and thank you for sharing it.
          I might get an extra $Fin for this 'upgrade', hah.

            No Problem, I believe in future versions the Excel feature packs has options to 'Include Hidden Fields' and 'Use Column Headers for Field Names' so that you do not have to take the view approach.
            These options are available when you select Export to Excel / Ascii in the Grid Properties.
