Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using SQL tables for security framework

I can understand just about everything from this document:

http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/a5/Usi...20Security.pdf except for this statement on page 3:

    Group_guid = (replace(newid(),'-','')) newid() is a SQL server function to create a
standard guid (UUID) value. The field in the security table contains a modified guid
    value with the hyphens removed.
Using MS SQL Express, I placed (replace(newid(),'-','')) as the computer column specification. This works when I create a record in the table using the M$ SQL Server Management Studio, but what do I do for the active link table in Alpha?
I keep getting an error when trying to enter a record in the active link table. Maybe I should not be trying to enter a record in the active link table, but I am not sure what I should do at this point. Do I just leave the SQL table the way it is?

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

we converted to MSQL when it was first released by running the sql scripts found here

In our case we just setup the active link tables and fields as per instructions although there were a couple of minor corrections to fields to those documented.
We then setup the development system by publishing the security files, active link table definitions etc.
It was then possible to setup the initial security groups(roles) and users using the a5 web security control panel.

Can you share what the "minor corrections" were ? I followed the document step by step and am not able to add/edit users through the Alpha Security Control panel. When I click "Users and Groups", nothing happens and no error messages are displayed. I created an adhoc grid to make sure there were no errors between the active links and the SQL tables and it works fine from that aspect, but I'm sure there's something wrong if the Alpha Security Panel can't open it.

Any insight is most appreciated, thanks, Dave

Double check you copied over the “websecurity_" files to the webproject folder as per the Testing and Deployment section of the pdf and restarted server as that seems to affect it.
The minor corrections were field naming overides from what i recall and only caused problems when actually applying changes via "Users and Groups" . I do not have exact details and the issues might have been fixed in more recent versions. We simply compared the fieldnames in the default DBF security files with those in the active link field overrides.

When you compared the field names, was it against the PDF document or the actual websecurity DBF's ?

compare it against the original websecurity DBF's.
The PDF gives minimum construction for the SQL table's but if you create the sql tables using the sql script some of the table and field names for the sql tables can differ.
            e.g.
table users is AllowedUsers and in a security schema
            field secQues is actually SecurityQuestion

Re: Using SQL tables for security framework

I am trying to implement SQL security and not having a lot of joy. I followed the paper refernced above but have found that only 2 of the 3 "Groups" records are copied. Any ideas why this would happen? It's late now so maybe with fresh eyes tomorrow I will solve it.

Has Jerry ever posted a link to the web components (grids and/or dialogs) to maintain users? It is certainly helpful what he has provided but unfortunately leaves out a very important part.

Is see that RodMc has posted a zip in the code archive but it uses a highly customized table. As an aside, I see posts that this is not recommended but Rod seems to have it working well. Any others have experience they care to share?

Re: Using SQL tables for security framework

I cleaned out my user table completely and started fresh and problem resolved.

I have also implemeted user addition (from Help system), maintenance and deletion thru the web, which works fine with one exception.

The only problem I have is that when I delete a user with A5WS_Delete_User() in a grid it does delete the user from the sql user table but does not delete the associated sql member records. Is this a bug or must I delete them separately?

When I use the "Users and Groups" in the developer environment the member records are deleted from the sql table.

Anyhow, I just added a script to delete the associated member records in sql rather than spend too much time on it
