Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Rida,

"PayPal" is just a gateway these days. They accept PayPal and all credit cards like any other payment gateway, e.g., Authorize.net. Users don't need a PayPal account to process their order.

Here is one security thing I found in this demo.

First you select a product to cart
Here is a picture just BEFORE SUBMIT to Paypal (total is 385)

      paypall just before submit.png

You can change the price of product just before you press submit
Here is a picture AFTER SUBMIT to Paypal (same product total is now 185)

      paypal after submit.png

You just have to change field value in field amount_1 just before submit (in this case).

        Felix,

As Steve says - they take all cards, plus people can pay by check through Paypal.

I assume you're testing things in general? Mine (done with Steve's cart) does not allow the quantity or amount to be changed in Paypal.

Re: Alpha Sports Web? Shopping Cart Example?

Ken, I will check that out, see if it works turnkey. I bet it does since PayPal only knows what it is told, and the amount_1-n are what it is being told is the amount due. I can and will add a fraud filter on the processing side where I will compare the amount paid to the amount the Cart says is due.

Re: Alpha Sports Web? Shopping Cart Example?

              Wendy,

Ken means take the SOURCE html on the payment page, put it in your own page.htm page, alter the amount_1 value and submit in place of my normal page. PayPal would hear "$185" and process that amount, not knowing it should be $385. There are several steps I can take.

              1. PayPal can issue an encryption code for a given client. I would use that encryption code to totally encrypt the order information. PayPal decrypts it on their end. No ability to mess with it.
              2. I can check the notification from PayPal against the amount the Cart says is due. If the differ, I can stop the process on the Alpha side. Only problem with this is that the PayPal transaction will still go through and I would have to deal with that. It would though be fun to interrogate the client as to why the amounts were different. It is likely illegal for someone to alter the payment details with intent to defraud the seller.

                    Ken,

Ah, I see now. Looking more closely, you're able to change the amount before submitting to Paypal. I'm not able to do that in mine either. But, I do want to see if there's anything I should watch out for. You're testing Steve's demo? I know he's updated it a bit since we installed it for my web site, so maybe something is different there.

                      LOL.

(Wait... did I actually just use LOL?)

I am currently in the process of redesigning my app, and thought of using a cart, but decided it really isn't worth it for me. I am only offering 3 potential purchases, and since the person can only choose one of them, (3, 6, or 12 months,) I think I would just need 3 buttons, and simply the ability to add the time to a record once PayPal returns the data that payment has been secured. I am assuming this should be fairly simple.

Then again I assumed my app would be a piece of cake, and has turned out much more complex then I had thought.

Well of course, I admit my folly. Although I have to say it would have been a piece of cake had I been willing to forgo all the bells and whistles. In fact there is a competing app out there that I could easily match, but I don't just want to match it, I want to blow it away. (From statements they have made, I get the impression their database is not very well designed.)

Ken said: Here is one security thing I found in this demo.

First you select a product to cart

So after some research, what Ken says is absolutely true, you can spoof a paypal transaction with minimum coding knowledge.

PayPal has two methods to defeat this:
                            1) EWP - Encrypted Web Payments
                            2) insert logic in the web application to confirm details of the transaction including order price, and to refund any incorrect transactions (since PP will have processed the transaction), and also NOT process the transaction (not send the customer the widget they ordered).

EWP involves creating and sharing a certificate with PayPal, and then encrypting the order form at runtime using a required "command line" 3rd party software.
The second method should be deployed regardless of the first option.

BTW - I am going to the PayPal X.Commerce conference in San Francisco in a few weeks. "X.Commerce" is PayPal's new end-to-end e-commerce solution.
