Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report does not contain any records. (A5 v7)

OK... I'm getting 'Report does not contain any records.' printed onto every second page *sometimes*. There seems to be a pattern, but I can't work out exactly what triggers it, or why it's happened suddenly.

This DB is used for one day a year, to help run an annual competition. It sits for the rest of the year - I delete the records and modify the headers etc for the annual event, but don't touch the basic code. (I'm no code monkey, so the code is ugly, but it mostly works for what we need it to do.) It's running on essentially the same system as it did last year (WinXP on an old laptop), and all I've done is copy the folder over to the new location and modify as required - the original version has the same problem now, too.

Any and all help welcome - this has to be sorted asap; if it can't be, we'll just have to wear the double cost of the stickers :) I'm running A5 v7 Build 4130 (which is, I think, the same as the DB was originally compiled on.)

In the interests of getting quick help, I've attached the .zip containing the DB.

(I know that we're on v10 now, but there's no way I'm shelling out the crazy money they want for it just to run one annual hobby show.)

    Thanks
    Rob

    I don't have vers 7 installed anymore.

Using vers 8 I'd check the following:

    1) Is the report filter working as designed? In the sample you furnished none of the records meet the report filtering criteria.

    2) The report seems to be hardcoded to a specific printer. Is that printer still installed on the system?

Hello again Tom... (you helped me ages ago, when I was setting this thing up.)

      To answer you...

      1. I have no idea, but it should be - nothing in the code should have changed. It's been a long time since I dug around in the code and I don't know what any of it does any more, as I learned almost enough to get this thing running back in '05. But I'll have a look and see what I can remember.

One thing... the report I'm getting the error with is the one that results from the 'PRINT' command on the 'ENTRY FORMS' page, which can be tabbed over to give an automatic print on the way to the next record - as far as I can recall, it's got all its commands etc in the places they should be - I did look. (I just re-read your post, and you seem to know this already, but I thought I should clarify.)

I'll populate a few more records and repost it, but there should have been enough data to work with. /me shrugs. Don't fret over it - life's too short to worry about stuff like this and I'm going to be too busy to spend much time on it before it's needed again. It's been OK every time it's been used for the last few years, it's just decided to play up this time around, so I thought someone might have known what was up.

      2. Yes, the printer for that 'Entry Forms' page is fixed as a Dymo Labelwriter, the same one we've used since the very beginning. I couldn't figure out how to set the thing up to have different printers, and we were going to use the output from the Dymo anyway, so I didn't strain too hard to work anything deep out. The 'Print Results' button on the first page outputs to whatever standard USB printer is connected, via the Windows Print Preview, and it usually works fne.

      *****************

In all honesty, it's never been a friendly piece of software to use - it needs a bit of a gentle touch or it falls over. I'm sure it's my bad DB design and coding, seeing as I knew nothing about this sort of thing when I started, and still don't. The box said it was simple...

Re: Report does not contain any records. (A5 v7)

Sorry Stan, it's still doing the same thing. I have discovered though that it only does it after printing a newly added record. Tabbing over the Print button to print previously entered records prints without any trouble. This is a workaround that I'll use for now - not optimal, but better than wasting expensive stickers.

I'll continue to monitor this thread to see if anyone can work it out for me, but I'm out of time. Thanks to you both for your input.

          Time for a rewrite...

Worked fine for me in V5 so I thought it would translate upversion. Oh well.
