Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A Simple challenge - How to Save Grid calculated field data to a field in a record.

    I know it sounds like it should be really easy to do.

    Believe it or not a bunch of our better Alpha minds out there seem to be stumped.

    The question quite simply is: how does one go about saving the result from an update-able grid calculated field into a field on a DBF record?

    Specifically use one of the virtual fields created when defining a calculation in the Query/Calculation fields part of the grid. You can see the result of the calculation when the Virtual field is placed on the grid. Now we want to save the results of the virtual field into a record field. Cannot figure out how to do this.

    Does anyone know how to do this? If so could you please explain the necessary steps involved?

    It seems like it would be so straight forward but it does have some of us stumped. Perhaps it needs to be done another way. All though I prefer to do it this way.

    I am using Alpha 5 V10.5 Web Grid. DBF

    Thank you.

    Try this: Hide the field on your grid. Using the CanDetailViewSubmit event get the calc value and set it to the hidden field value. Haven't done this myself but it's worth a try.

      Hi Peter,
      Thanks for you suggestion.
      I know in your invoice example it seems that your invoice footer does its summary calculations hard coded within the grid events part.

      What I am interested in is having the calculation done in the calculation part of the grid and then saving the results to a field in the table.

        Calyxte,

        You're right, it doesn't work.The reason is - is that the "query" calc fires after the record has been submitted. It's a server side event. By the time the calc fires, the record has already been saved. OTOH, since this is dbf, you could define the calculated field in the table's field rules.

          Thank you Peter.
          It makes a lot of sense.
          So for someone who is not using the Dbase Table field rules they will have to figure out another way to perform the calculation, perhaps in Xbasic and then apply the results before the grid/row is rendered or after wards if they want to save the Virtual calculated field data to their table.

            Calyxte,

            Now I'm a little confused. If you are using SQL then the "query" "calc" fields are not available to you anyway. That makes me wonder why you posed the question as you did? If you need to get at certain xbasic functions, take a look at the grid events section (not JavaScript events) - although JS might be what you need? Another possibility is to use an AJAX callback to an xbasic function (which can be tricky at times due to timing issues between server and browser).

              Hi Peter,
              I didn't mean to confuse at all.
              I am working with Dbase only, so I am not sure really what is available to the SQL side of things. I was just postulating if someone was using the sql side of things.

              For me, A Dbase user, if there is a way to save a calculated virtual field data to the underlying table from the grid I would like to know how to do it.

              Anyone know of a way?

                I'm not proficient with A5 dbf so this could be way off base but can you set some "posting" rules from your table? See the pic. Like I say, I might be way off...

                  Re: A Simple challenge - How to Save Grid calculated field data to a field in a recor

                  This can be done by using the calculated field rules on the dbf table itself. What I am interested in exploring is how to do it using the grid without using the dbf rules on the table.

                    If you where using sql you will just use a view, no need to save the value in a field
                    Cheers

                      Calxyte,

                      Not sure if this is exactly what you want to do, but...

                      As said above by Peter, create your field and then add it to your grid and you can hide it.

                      In the Grid Properties, you'll have to use the event that best suits you... I tried the OnRowSelect under the Javascript System Events and it seems to work ok... but it depends on how you want this to work. I put this code in to read a value and the set a value. In this case you still have to click the submit button but you haven't specified how you want it to work.

                      Code:
                      var rowNum = {Grid.Object}._selectedRow;
                      var newname = {grid.Object}.getValue('G', 'NEWPRODNAME', rowNum);
                      var x = {grid.Object}.setValue('G','PRODLONGDESC', rowNum, newname);
