Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email settings using Hotmail

    Hi all
    Has anyone successfully set up a 'Profile' of email settings using Hotmail mail server settings and managed to get the 'test button' to show a 'success'. We've tried all settings with no luck.

    We would not normally use Hotmail but a large percentage of our clients do so we are trying to replicate on our own PC.

    Please see attached error when using the 'test button'.

        Re: Email settings using Hotmail

        Finally got this fixed.

        If anyone else has the same problem here are the settings -
        pop3.live.com (incoming server)
        smtp.live.com (outgoing server)
        SSL authentification - receiving,
        TLS authentification - sending + log on using settings below (put username and password in the boxes again)
        Ports - Smtp 25 and Pop 110.

        The alpha test button still fails with these settings but using both the report mailer or your email client accepts these settings.

            Thanks Michael. I had no idea it was even possible to connect to Hotmail as a Pop3 account.

            Is there anything that needs to be defined in the Hotmail account itself in order to do this? Gmail requires additional setup if you want to use Pop3 with Gmail but I don't have a Hotmail account and couldn't find anything on their main website about it. Like you, I've had customers ask me to set up my app to connect with Hotmail and I've always told them it wasn't possible.

              Cal

              For our test we created a free Hotmail account and used the settings showing in our post with no other changes, however you might want to read the quote below taken from the Hotmail team detailing their rollout of 'Pop' support.

              "The POP3 and SMTP support for Hotmail will be rolled out gradually to all users. Initially, only users in United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands will have the POP3 feature enabled on Hotmail account for free. Hotmail users from other countries will have to wait longer to enjoy the free POP3 and SMTP protocol access."

                Re: Email settings using Hotmail

                Thanks. Dunno what I was thinking. I just looked at the Hotmail website and couldn't find anything. A Google search found plenty - including this:

                As of March 12, 2009, POP3 access is now available free to all Hotmail users worldwide.
                Read more: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_th...#ixzz1Miel649B

                FWIW, it also shows a different POP port. I don't have any idea what the significance of that is. I'm just reporting what I found online:

                POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
                POP SSL required? Yes
                User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example [email protected]
                Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
                SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587) [somewhere it said to use 587 if 25 doesn't work]
                Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
                TLS/SSL required? Yes

                  We have finally got this sorted but still not sure why the Alpha 'test button' does not succeed with the correct and working settings.

                    Re: Email settings using Hotmail

                    Michael I was wondering if you could fill out the blanks in this for me, because it does not work for me

                    function AfterInsertRecord as v (e as p)

                    dim pm as P
                    dim ps as P
                    if (email_smtp_open(ps, "SMTP Host", PORT, "email address", "password","SSL","TTL")) then

                    pm.to = "email address
                    pm.from = "FROM"
                    pm.subject = "my subject"
                    pm.message = "this is the message"
                    pm.html_message = "This is the message in HTML"
                    email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
                    end if
                    email_smtp_close(ps)

                    This would really help me.

                    Thanks
                    Roelof

                      Re: Email settings using Hotmail

                      I believe from what was written, it would be:

                      Code:
                      email_smtp_open(ps,"smtp.live.com",25,"yourusername","yourpassword","SSL")

                        Well I typed it in exactly as you said but it does not work

                        debug(1)
                        dim pm as P
                        dim ps as P

                        if (email_smtp_open(ps, "smtp.live.com", 25 ,"[email protected]","password","SSL")) then
                        pm.to = "[email protected]"

                        pm.from = "[email protected]"

                        pm.subject = "my subject"

                        pm.message = "this is the message"

                        pm.html_message = "This is the message in HTML"

                        email_smtp_send(pm, ps)

                        end if

                        email_smtp_close(ps)

                        end function

                        I am sooooo frustrated with this email, I cannot get it to work

                          Re: Email settings using Hotmail

                          Oh, come on!

                          I'm pretty certain that YOUR email address is NOT "[email protected]" and YOUR password is not "password". Those are things you need to replace with YOUR specific information.

                          try this in the Interactive Window replacing the things in red with your actual email address and password.

                          Code:
                          dim pm as P
                          dim ps as P

                          if (email_smtp_open(ps, "smtp.live.com", 25, [COLOR="red"]"[email protected]","password"[/COLOR],"SSL")) then
                          	pm.to = "[email protected]"
                          	pm.from = "[email protected]"
                          	pm.subject = "my subject"
                          	pm.message = "this is the message"
                          	pm.html_message = "This is the message in HTML"

                          	if email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
                          		msgbox("message sent")
                          	else
                          		msgbox("connection made but mail not sent")
                          	end if

                          else
                          	msgbox("The smtp connection was not established")
                          end if

                              then try 587 instead of 25 and then try removing SSL and put in TLS and then try leaving last parameter empty.
