Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Internal Alpha Five Error using file.watch

It's been almost five years since I've worked with Alpha and jumping back in. I realized how rusty I am and hoping to get some insight.

I need to monitor a series of directories for when new files are added and send mail to the correct individual when that happens. What is the best way to tackle this?
file.watch_create() will fire when something is added, deleted, or renamed. Do I just build in a bunch of "if" statements to filter out the added files?
    .or.
Do I populate a table with all current files and use file.get() to check for delta records on a timed schedule?

    Thanks In Advance,
    Troy

Well, I guess the forums have degraded. I'm disappointed.

No replies on first post. Have the Boards deteriated this much or is this stupid?

        Hi Troy,
Well, I guess the forums have degraded. I'm disappointed.
Think you just hit us at bad time....if you read the messageboard day in and day out (as I do) you will realize that it has not degraded at all--in fact I think the responses here are even better than in the past as there are far more "gurus" here now.

Regarding your issue, I did read it when you first posted but currently do not have the time to get together an example for you. I possibly may be in need of almost the same scenario so may find the time to delve into it---it can be done as I've read other threads in the past of users doing similar. I will for sure post back if I do create something though.
        Mike

Thanks Mike for the response! If you want to send me your thoughts on an approach to take, I can start writing it.

Create a UDF to send the email, let's call it email_On_File_change()
Place this code in the appropriate event:
            file.watch_create("your_fiel_name", "You_fiel_path", "F", "email_On_File_change()")

Re: Trying to get back on the wagon and using file.watch_create()

Thanks G Gabriel for the response. I did not see it until now. I am monitoring a large amount of folders and subfolders. Any ideas on how to get the file that was created. There are hundres.?
I was considering doing something like

              file.watch_create("folder_watch", "Z:\repository\", "F", "filefind.list_new_files("z:\repository\","*.zip","date()")")

I would likely have to break out the filefind.list_new_files() function but this would at least give me the path to put in the email

In this thread they mention stopping the file.watch_create() first http://www.alphasoftware.com/alphafo...e.watch_create

Any thoughts if my solution will work or a better way to approach it?
              Thanks In Advance.

I'm also getting an alpha internal error everytime I try to run

                file.watch_create("response", "C:\filewatch\\","F","script_play_local(enternewrecord)")

Does anyone else get this error when trying to run a script from file.watch?

script_play_local(enternewrecord) is NOT a function, but rather a line of code hence the error. Alpha is looking for a function to execute. Replace it with the function itself.

Re: Internal Alpha Five Error using file.watch

I don't get an error if I use

                      file.watch_create("response", "C:\filewatch","F","script_play(\"enternewrecord\")")

no backslashes after the directory name as per the example in the help.
                      There can be only one.

Don't know if you're monitoring this thread and the one in the V8 forum.

Lose the two backslashes after "c:\filewatch"

                        file.watch_create("response", "C:\filewatch","F","script_play_local(enternewrecord)")
                        There can be only one.

How/where are you using it? I get this in the interactive.

                            Code:
                            ? file.watch_create("response", "C:\filewatch","F","script_play(\"enternewrecord\")")
                            = <No data returned>
                            ? file.watch_enumerate()
                            = response	C:\filewatch	F
You error still indicates backslashes in the path parameter.
                            There can be only one.

The context of why I am using it is at the other post. http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...752#post573752

I get the same in the interactive window but when assigned to an event, i get the error. Gabriel suggests it needs to be an expression and not code however I've seen people use it in this context before.
