Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    String to Array

    I have opened a csv file that contains rows that look like:
    '"";"";"ADAF, ISABELITA";"";"";"";"";"";"1548";"";"";"";"271972572";"";"";"";"";"";"";"";"";"3876988771";"";"";"D";"";"";"Hold";"";"";"";"";"$124.19";"";

    I can read each row into a variable names ln
    I can extract values from ln using strtrans() & word()
    BUT... i want to store each line that i read in an array variable
    dim CSV_DATA[500] As C

    The following code writes out the value of lnc correctly BUT the value of CSV_DATA[Count] is null.
    How can i correctly store lnc as a string in the CSV_DATA[] array?
    I thought that QUOTE() would do the job... but it doesn't.

    Count = 1
    while .not. fil.eof()
    ln = fil.read_line()
    lnc = strtran(ln,chr(59),",")
    CSV_DATA[Count] = Quote(lnc)
    'ui_msg_box("CSV_DATA value",CSV_DATA[Count],UI_ATTENTION_SYMBOL+UI_OK)
    Count = Count + 1
    'trace.WriteLn("TextLine: "+lnc).... this displays correctly
    trace.WriteLn("TextLine: "+CSV_DATA[Count]) ... this shows null
    'Test4End = substr(word(lnc,3,","),2,18)
    'ui_msg_box("Test4End Count:"+str(Count),Test4End,UI_ATTENTION_SYMBOL+UI_OK)
    end while

    Re: String to Array

    Code:
    lnc = strtran(ln,chr(59),",")
    Changes the semicolons to commas. You still have a text file line with multiple pairs of quotes. That is not something you can assign to a character array variable and each line read from the text file is not a string.
    There can be only one.

      Re: String to Array

      so... is there any way to do this? Can i do something with lnc to enable it to be storred in an array?

      It seems peculiar to me because i can opperate on lnc, print it, parse it etc.
      If lnc is not a variable containing a multiquote value... what is it?
      Thanks

        Re: String to Array

        lnc is a variable containing a multiquote value, it is not a string.

        Try this in the interactive window

        ? "david","boomer"

        Same thing happens when you try to assign such a line to an array variable.

        You could do something like this

        Code:
        dim csv_data[1] as C
        ln = fil.read_line()

        ln = strtran(ln,chr(59),",")

        ln = strtran(ln,chr(34),"")

        ? ln
        = "',,ADAF,ISABELITA,,,,,,1548,,,,271972572,,,,,,,,,3876988771,,,D,,,Hold,,,,,$124.19,,"

        csv_data[1] = ln
        ? csv_data[1]
        = "',,ADAF,ISABELITA,,,,,,1548,,,,271972572,,,,,,,,,3876988771,,,D,,,Hold,,,,,$124.19,,"

        fil.close()
        There can be only one.

                a very quick read of this thread did not show you using the following
                filenames is dimensioned as an array and test_list is a dlimited text file.

                file_names.initialize(temp_list)

                  Hi John...
                  i have a different problem. i am reading records (lines) from a CSV formatted file (just a single file). i want to parse info from each line & stuff it into a new table.
                  The problem that i was having was that I could read each line (record) and even parse the different fields from the variable that i read the line into... BUT when i tried to store the different lines (records) into a string array, Alpha just placed the first field (usually null) into the array element.
                  Stan solved my problem with the strtran(ln,chr(34),"") function. When this is done i can successfully populate each element in the array with each line in the csv file.
                  ... made me VERY happy!

                  D
