Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Create New Table from Form Fields

    Hi all..

I'm trying to take the fields from a (3 table set) form:

    MenuTable - F_ID, F1,

    Table1Form, F_ID F1, F2, F3

    Table2Form, F_ID F4, F5, F6

    To construct a new table:

    NewTable,
    1. F_IDa, F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6
    2. F_IDb, F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6

..but the Copy Records operation keeps creating the new table with separate records and duplicate ID's: ie:

    NewTable,
    1. F_IDa, F1, F2, F3,
    2. F_IDa, F4, F5, F6
    3. F_IDb, F1, F2, F3,
    4. F_IDb, F4, F5, F6

Even though the ID fields on each table are the same..

Is there a way to force the form field merge based on the ID Field ?

    Thanks in advance..

    Steve

Re: Create New Table from Form Fields

Maybe I am getting dense with age. I do not understand what you are trying to do.

Fields are in tables. They are displayed and editable on forms.
variables are like fields held in memory. you can display variables on forms.

I would have no idea how to make a form full of fields into a table easily. It can be done with a little coding of course. The fields on the form can be copied to variables and written to an existing table and if there is no existing, can make one.

      hi Dave..

The Copy Records operation allows you to select either all records in a set, all records on the form, or selected records - but regardless of the selection it still creates separate records for each of the underlying forms..

Think I may have solved it now though - not a very pretty xbasic hack though !

      Thx

You can use a copy operation based on a set or a join operation that joins the 3 tables into a new table.

          Hi Al..

That's what I tried to do initially, but it took the fields from the respective tables and put them into separate records..

I've now changed the set & table structure to 2 tables, and it seems to work ok..

I think we are talking about different processes..

Can you post an example of what you are doing?

Actually I can't now - I've changed the sets and table structure and deleted the backups once it all worked..

              Thanks anyway Al..

(Though could give me a pointer for the alternate join operation process just for future reference..?)

                Intersect, join, subtract.
                There can be only one.

                  What? No backup?

I think you are looking at the options from the menu when you have a form open.

Look at what Stan posted for building operations based on tables and sets that are built from the control panel ( or right click on the table or set)

Thanks to you both - you're right Al in that I was only looking at operation options available through the form - the intersect & join info was just what I needed..
